In questioning whether a recent event, which drew more than 1,000 people to the centre, resulted in a profit for REACH, Councillor Alex Westerhout, who sits on the REACH board, says only a rental fee was collected. Barnim proved to be surprised to learn that REACH is offering up a discounted rate to REACH renters using the facility for the first time. “The 10th one should be free, not the first one, that’s how you motivate people,” says Barnim, who also suggests more “joint ventures” should be held in an effort to improve upon the bottom line. He also suggested opening a concession stand for events. Westerhout notes the REACH board has already discussed and is moving forward with both of those ideas. *** CAO Kevin McLlwain reports everything is on track to ensure the Central Huron Community Complex opens its doors on schedule. Upon questioning from Councillor Marg Anderson, McLlwain reports the largest remaining project involves the flooring, which is expected to take three weeks to place. *** Whether to outfit the new Central Huron Community Complex’s canteen with municipal workers or contract the job out to a community- service group or business proved to stoke fires of debate. Upon the recommendation of Councillor Brian Barnim, councillors agreed that the municipality should run the canteen at first and later tailor its operation to suit the needs as they grow. More Ontario farmers will now be able to expand their farms with increased access to low-interest loans for buying cattle and growing herds. Through the Feeder Cattle Loan Guarantee Program, Ontario is increasing the amount of support available to farmers from $80 million to $130 million. This will allow more farmers, including new farmers, to get loans to buy feeder cattle and have improved access to competitive interest rates. New farmers can receive up to $50,000 for cattle purchases and established farmers can receive up to $250,000. A strong agri-food industry is part of the McGuinty government’s plan to create jobs and opportunities that will grow the province's economy. “The changes we have made to this important and effective program will provide the support the beef industry needs to grow and expand, helping strengthen the economy and create jobs. When we support our farmers, we ensure Ontario families continue to enjoy healthy local food,” said Carol Mitchell, Huron-Bruce MPP and Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. “The increase of funding to the Feeder Cattle Loan Guarantee Program will ensure continued support for the cattle feeder sector in the province. This program has been a successful venture for over 20 years and this support will provide our young farmers with the resources to establish themselves in the Ontario beef industry,” said Curtis Royal, President, Ontario Cattlemen’s Association.
