NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Community feels loss
I’m feeling sad, yet hopeful
today. Sheila Richards died last
week. I’m sad she’s no longer with
us after many years as a
community-spirited lady, yet I’m
hopeful for small villages.
Sheila came to us from the city
and that automatically made her
suspect. Her grace, good humour
and people skills soon made her a
force to be reckoned with as she
saw clearly what would make our
area even better. Her influence was
often subtle, yet direct as she shared
her reason and logic for a project. It
might be Guiding, viable theatre, an
accessible United Church, a
weekly community newspaper, a
political notion or a tea party, but
soon you were in action with her.
We all won, made new friends
along the way and had a good time
doing it. So to Rob and Helen,
Doug and Jane all her marvelous
grandchildren – we too will miss
Sheila, but we’ll keep telling her
stories.
Several Brussels folk were seen
in Blyth on Friday night to support
the Japanese fundraiser organized
by the theatre and Blyth United
Church. Good will and talent were
out in full force as adults and
children offered their gifts for a
worthy cause. So good work folks,
using your talents and abilities for a
better world and entertaining an
appreciative crowd as well. Thanks.
Hank and Agnes TenPas had a
good time on Saturday recalling the
years gone by. A 50th anniversary,
Paul, Linda and Trish at home,
wonderful grandchildren and many
stories to hear and share made for a
great day for celebrating.
Congratulations!
We visited the Destroyer Haida, aNational Parks setting in Hamiltonthis month. The history and effectof this very large ship was great. Tomake the visit even better, talkingto Ross Procter at the Lions dinner,
he told me he was part of the crew,
a few years ago and painting it, at
the time had been part of his duties.
He was pleased to hear the Haida
was still grey and I was pleased to
hear of his connection to our
history.
Music of the bluegrass kind with
Juno nominee Michael Pickett will
have your toes tapping at Cinnamon

Enjoy all Mother Nature is

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Congratulations
Hank and Aggie Ten Pas celebrated their 50th anniversary
on Saturday at the Brussels Legion with dozens of friends
and family members. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
Fiftieth wedding
anniversary celebrated
Just over 50 years ago Agnes Van
Veen and Hendrik Ten Pas, also
known as Aggie and Hank, were
wed in the Brussels Presbyterian
Church.
On June 10, 1961, Hendrik, the
son of Bernard and Hanna Ten Pas
of Bluevale, and Agnes, daughter of
Marinus and Aagje (Agnes) of
Brussels, were wed by Minister
Simon Terpstra.
In attendance were Clara Van
Merkenstein, Wilma Ten Pas,
Dianne Ten Pas, Joan Elliott, Albert
Ten Pas, Gerrit Van Veen, Klaas
Devries and Ben Ten Pas.
Following the ceremony the
couple honeymooned in Niagara
Falls before returning to their home
on Mill Street in Brussels.
The couple lived there, on the
banks of the beautiful Maitland
River, for over 40 years.
Hendrik was a carpenter while
Agnes was a house wife and ran the
Brussels Just for You Flower Shop
for 14 years. Both retired in 2005.
The couple has three children;
Paul, Patricia and Linda and five
grandchildren; Krista, Katelyn,
Drew, Kirk and Nicholas.
Hendrik and Agnes’ interests
include community service,
including Hendrik being a volunteer
driver for Town and Country, now
OneCare, six days a week.
The anniversary celebration was
held at the Brussels Legion on June
10 with guests coming from
California, Michigan, British
Columbia, Ottawa, Toronto, Guelph,
London, Listowel and Goderich.
At the Branch
Lunch, anniversary
keep caterers busy
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a busy week at the Brussels
Legion Branch. The week started
with the seniors luncheon on June 6
at noon. Over 40 diners enjoyed the
ham and scalloped potatoes
prepared. Guests were welcomed by
Branch Seniors chairman, Comrade
Wanda Walker and Bush Whittard.
Everyone’s name was entered into a
draw for the ladies’ and men’s door
prize. Comrade Wanda welcomed
everyone and then Padre Sandra
Cable said a few words on “life of a
senior”. She then said grace and
everyone had their dinner. A group
of local musicians provided
musical entertainment for the crowd
following dinner. “Just Fun” trio
plus one include Don and Dale
Chesher, Ron Howatt and friend
Arnold Bruce. Everyone enjoyed
the afternoon and Comrade Wanda
appreciates the support.
The seniors luncheon food crew
included Comrades Jo-Ann
McDonald, Mabel Glanville, Deb
Caan and Mary Bradshaw. Good job
ladies.
Comrade Isobel Workman is a
patient in Seaforth Hospital and we
wish her continued improvement.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had 15 and a half tables of players.
Winners were: first, George and
Deanna Bacon, 79; second, Delores
Howatt and Lillian Appleby, 73;
third, Norm Dobson and George
Love; lone hand, Rowley and Bev
Noble; low, Viola Edgar and Ruth
