Gerald Exel Carpentry Brussels 519-887-9616 Continued from page 40 has claimed the lives of many protesters in its quest for better government. Violence continues in Afghanistan even as our troops withdraw. And here in the west, addictions, lust and divorce exact a steep and painful price from family life and the wholeness of individuals. Yet the One born at Bethlehem, crucified outside Jerusalem, makes available forgiveness from guilt, hence offering true inner peace, reconciliation with a Holy God, so that we can in turn extend grace and mercy to others who have wronged us. “For He Himself is our peace, who has ... destroyed the barrier, the dividing wall of hostility, by abolishing in His flesh the law with its commandments and regulations... He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near.” (Eph. 2:14- 17) Because He paid the huge price for our guilt in order to satisfy the wrath divine justice demanded, thus opening the floodgates of God’s mercy instead, He can say to His followers, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you... Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” (Jn. 14:27) Yet when the time for Christ’s birth finally came, it was not Isaiah’s terms that were chosen, but one relayed by an angel: “You are to give Him the name Jesus, because He will save His people from their sins.” The word ‘Jesus’ is the Greek form of ‘Joshua’ which means ‘the Lord saves’. Sin is unquestionably our root problem, from which we need saving if there is to be any hope for our world and our immediate relationships. The Purpose-Driven Life author Rick Warren writes, “We’re all born with an ‘I’ problem. We are, by nature, self-centred...If people were naturally unselfish, there’d never be any conflict, divorce, abuse, greed, crime, gossip or war on earth. Our natural inclination is to want our own way instead of God’s way. This tendency to make wrong choices instead of right ones is called sin. The middle letter of sin is I, and whenever I place myself at the centre of my life, I sin. It is any attitude or action that denies God His rightful place as first in my life. Sin is our greatest problem... Our disconnectedness from God, which is due to our stubborn sinfulness, is the source of every single human problem on earth.” I am most thankful at Christmas the special baby born was named Jesus. His coming to save us from our warped selves offers hope for every baby born, before or since! The Huron County Health Unit isreminding the public to avoidcontact with any wild animals.Several raccoons in Huron County have tested positive for distemperand round worms.Distemper is a viral disease thataffects animals. It is contagious to other animals and is often fatal.Round worms are parasites that canbe passed on to people.Infected animals may look sick and may wander up to people. PublicHealth Inspector Jessica Van Geffensays some people have been bittenwhen they picked up the sick animal. “Round worms can infect humans and distemper is dangerous to pets and other animals. We’re also concerned about the risk of rabies when anyone comes in contact with a wild animal.” Rabies is a viral disease that is fatal to humans. It is passed to humans from saliva of infected animals. Van Geffen says avoid feeding wild animals because it can attract them to your home. “It is also important to teach children to stay away from any animal they do not know. If you see a baby animal that appears to be orphaned, leave it alone. Chances are its mother isnearby. The possible danger to youor your child outweighs the goodyou might do for the animal. Notify the nearest animal control office instead.” Van Geffen is urging residents to have their pets checked regularly by a veterinarian and have them dewormed and vaccinated for distemper and rabies. Van Geffen recommends being careful about touching your pet if it has been in a fight with a wild animal. Use gloves and don’t touch your own eyes or face. She says dogs and cats often get into fights with wild animals. The wild animal can leave saliva behind on your pet’s coat and the saliva can carry the Jesus saves us from ourselves Animals test positive for distemper, round worms Waiting their turn Brook Ohm, left, Carson Beauchamp, centre, and Ryan Miller, right, were part of a class using props for their part of the Christmas concert at Hullett Central Public School on Dec. 13, holding up their favourite present designs or Christmas decorations.
