NEWS
FROM WALTON
Christmas is almost upon us and
families are making plans to be
together. There are families who
gather before Christmas Day and
have already celebrated a special day
together. Let’s not forget the reason
for the season is not only about gifts,
but about family, love and for many,
the birth of baby Jesus. It has been
our family tradition for many years
to go to church at Duff’s United,
Walton, for the Christmas Eve
service. Duff’s has traditionally a
full house for the service and all are
invited to join us in Walton.
It doesn’t look like it will be a
white Christmas but travelling will
hopefully be easier for all. The
bright displays of Christmas lights
around the country make it look
festive and should help create the
holiday spirit for all. We wish
everyone Merry Christmas and
Happy Holidays.
The Shortreed and Moffat families
have a very special reason to be
happy this holiday season. This past
week, Matt and Julie Shortreed,
welcomed the early arrival of a
beautiful baby boy. Conner William
is doing well and he will be home to
Walton by now. Grandma Val had
told me the baby’s room wasn’t quite
ready, but Matt thought he still had
another few weeks to get the job
done. Surprise! Babies don’t
always wait for the due
date. Congratulations to the
Shortreeds.
The family of Mary I. Humphries
gathered at the Highland apartments
activity room to celebrate their
Christmas. They enjoyed a catered
meal and Mary was very pleased to
have all but two family members in
attendance. Mary has three children,
Bob, Wenda and Kim and has seven
grandchildren and eight great-
grandchildren.
There has been good news from
the west for two local families. A
wedding will be in the plans for the
Glenn Beuerman and Jim McNichol
families with the announcement of
the engagement of Allison
Beuerman and Kyle McNichol.
Congratulations to the couple and
happy wedding plans.
Returning from a pre-Christmas
holiday is Helen Craig. Helen and
her sister Mary, from Vancouver,
spent a week in old Quebec City.
Mary flew from Vancouver to spend
a day or so here, and then the pair
flew to Quebec. They attended the
Gran Prix skating event in Quebec.
The top six skaters in each category
were competing for the grand title.
When the pair weren’t watching
skating they were walking the streets
of Old Quebec City. They found it
very interesting and delightful. They
went to many of the eating venues to
try the various French cuisine dishes
like crepes, tortes and the tasty
French treats. Helen reports it was
good they wanted to walk as it
helped balance the rich diet they
were enjoying.
They returned to our area after the
week or so and Mary then spent a
week in Kitchener at their brother
Bob’s. The group gathered to help
Mary celebrate her 60th birthday,
and Christmas, while she was here
and then she returned to her home in
Vancouver.
The Murphy Bus Line Christmas
party was held on Saturday evening. We attended the event held at theLucan Community Centre. Therewere over 600 attending, with morethan half being drivers for the
company. We all enjoyed wine and
cheese to start, then a delicious
turkey dinner and then dozens of
door prizes were given away.
Presentations of retirement gifts and
years of service pins were also
made. There were plenty of non-
alcoholic drinks available for the
drivers of the buses who volunteered
to drive their fellow drivers to the
party! It was a nice evening and was
over by 10 p.m.Celebrating birthdays this pastweek include Anne Clark, JenniferGerber, Kevin Gillis, RobMacGillivary, Peter Strong, David

Duff’s United Church will have a
Christmas Eve service conducted by
the Rev. Peter along with members
of the congregation. It is always a
wonderful service with lots of
families gathering together to come
to church. It will be a time of song
and reflection and a chance to see
friends, family and neighbours and
wish them a Merry Christmas.
Need that last-minute Christmas
present? The Duff’s United Church
cookbooks are still available and can
be picked up from Phyllis Mitchell
or Jo-Ann McDonald in Brussels.
Get well or fast healing wishes go
out to John Heuther who is
recovering from knee surgery. We
hope he is up and around in no time.
Isabelle Craig was still in Seaforth
Hospital and we hope her arm is
healing well. Barry Hoegy has also
been a patient at Seaforth and we
hope he is coming along. Doreen
Hackwell is in the Seaforth Manor.
There were many Cranbrook and
area folks who attended the wake
and funeral services for Joyce Lake
this past week. Many will remember
the late Charlie and Joyce Lake from
the Union School area, just down the
road from Cranbrook. Our
sympathies are extended to their
daughters Marie, Linda, Gail, Susan
and Carolyn (deceased) and their
families.

Christmas Eve service
A group of 15 local Huron County
hunters have returned from a week’s
hunting trip to the North Bay area.
They had a very successful hunt
shooting three bull moose, two cows
and one calf.
A couple of very happy guys were
Matt Lee and Greg McLeod
shooting a large bull moose. The
rack of the moose was a 51" span.
They thought they had managed to
get the largest kill, but another part
of their group shot a bull moose and
the rack was a 52" span.
The racks are massive and it
certainly takes a couple of guys to
move the racks. It’s going to take
some strong supports to mount these
trophy racks.
Congratulations to Matt and
Greg.
The McKillop ladies gathered on
Monday morning to celebrate
belated birthdays and Christmas at
the Walton Inn. Celebrating
birthdays were Judy Beuerman,
Yolanda Gubelman and Brenda
Bernard. Helping the ladies to
celebrate their birthday breakfast
were Carol and Shawn Reinink,
Karen Braecker, Marlene Glanville
and Jennifer Vellinga. Happy
birthday and Merry Christmas to the
ladies.
