Staff at East Wawanosh Public
School wanted their last school
concert to be memorable as the
school is slated to close before the
2012-2013 school year begins.
“We wanted to go back to the
basics,” Principal Wendy
Armstrong-Gibson said. “We had an
old fashioned concert with each
class preparing its own show.
Everyone from Kindergarten to
Grade 8 was involved and we had a
special finale planned.”
Typically the school had the
Kindergarten to Grade 5 classes
participate in the concert but, due to
a lower school population, that limit
has been re-evaluated.
“Usually we have Kindergarten to
Grade 5 participate every other year,
and would have this year, but we
decided to make it unique,” Kim
Walker, the teacher responsible for
the concert said.
“With the population shrink we
were able to feature everyone,”
Armstrong-Gibson said. “Usually
the senior students would be in the
spring concert, but the program for
that is yet to be determined.”
The special ending was a special
creation for the school; a digital
slide show accompanied by the
Primary Choir singing “What a
Wonderful School” to the tune of
“What a Wonderful World.”
Other special contributions from
the school included three
performances that were designed,
written and/or choreographed by the
students and teachers.
“The kids have more fun whenthey’re involved like that,”Armstrong-Gibson said. “They buy
in more if they’re more responsible
for everything.”
This year’s play featured “a little
bit of everything” according to
Armstrong-Gibson.
“It’s kind of like a goodbye,” she
said. “Especially the last song. It’s
touching base with everyone and
showing how great of a school this
is. It doesn’t matter where we end
up, we’re going to keep learning
because we have wonderful staff and
students.
“It doesn’t matter what building
we are in, the school spirit will
continue on,” she said. Both Walker and Armstrong-Gibson agreed that the play, which
was held on Dec. 19, was an
important night for the surrounding
community.
“It’s a big night for Belgrave and
the surrounding area and all the
families that have been involved for
the class,” Armstrong-Gibson said.
“It was a special evening,” Walker
added.
Walker, who has 24 years of
experience at the school, said that
this concert was a throwback to
the way the school used to do
concerts.
“When we started everyone was
responsible for their owncontributions,” she said. “Throughthe years we generally started doing
more operettas and musicals and we
got away from religious themes and
things like nativity scenes because
we were supposed to move away
from them.”
Walker said that other changes
have included the addition of new
technologies.
“Technology has become more
and more important,” she said.
“When we started we never used
computers or iPods but now for
audio and visual components we can
use technology to make them easier
and better.”

Students discuss Santa’s elves
Shoulda’ put a ring on it
During one of the East Wawanosh Public School Grade 7/8
Class’ pop-culture-reference-laden performances during
the school’s Dec. 19 Christmas Concert, Santa, played by
Henri Frischknecht, had a unique problem. Apparently he
and Mrs. Claus had never really tied the knot, and, after
she dumped him and he found someone new, she wanted
to get back together. Brett Jarvis wanted Santa to tell Mrs.
Claus that, if she liked it then she ‘shoulda’ put a ring on it.

Christmas to start using makeup. I
think the elves would need to find
special things to make makeup with
and put it into containers. They
would find special ingredients and
boil them and make it into makeup
and then put it into a kit after they
mixed them all together.”
Amy
“I want hockey pads because my
cousin comes to my place on
Saturdays and he plays goalie and I
want to try. The elves could make
them by putting soft stuff like a
pillow in some other harder stuff
that will hold it and then put stuff on
it and paint that stuff. That’s
definitely how they do it.”
Nate
“I hope I get a toy sewing machine
for Christmas. I don’t know how
they would make it. The elves would
probably just make a big, real
sewing machine and then use their
magic to shrink it and make it safe
so no one gets hurt or stuck by it. It’s
probably easier to make a big one
and shrink it than it is to make a
small one.”
Genevieve
“I want an iPod Shuffle and some
fashion scarves that are white and
black. I think that Santa would
probably just buy them both from
the store to make it quicker. Santa
gave me an iPod last year and I think
he just bought it, but it got broke.”
Regan
“I really hope there is a Nintendo
Wii from Santa for me on Christmas
because my friends have one and it’s
a lot of fun. The elves would
probably go buy one in Japan and
buy it because there are a lot of
electrical stores there and they make
all the Nintendo stuff there.”
Grace
“I want some John Deere tractors
for Christmas. I don’t know how
they make them, but I hope they
make them stronger this year. Last
year I got a combine and I broke the
cab and auger on it, so I hope they
make it stronger. They probably use
tools like a hammer and screwdriver
to put the wheels together and a saw
and they maybe make the plastic
parts.
