The Citizen had a chance to talk to
the Grade 1/2 Class at Blyth Public
School and ask them why
they thought Santa Claus chose
the colour red for his trademark
suit.
While most agreed it was because
red was a colour typically associated
with Christmas, students’ answers as
to how that came about varied
greatly.
Here are their thoughts on the
matter:
“Santa wears his red suit because
red is a Christmas colour. It was a
Christmas colour first and it’s
always on the Christmas trees, so he
used that.”
Ava
“Santa wears red because there is
mostly red bulbs on the Christmas
tree. He might also wear it because
it’s his favourite colour and it
matches Rudolph’s nose.”
Shyanne
“He wears red because he knows
that it makes the reindeers job
easier. They only have to look for
one colour because Santa and
Rudolph are both red.”
Justin
“Santa wears red because he has to
match the colour of his sled and
because it helps him sneak around
and drop off gifts. The red suit
makes people think they’re just
seeing red Christmas lights.”
Brody L.
“I think Santa wears a red suit
because it’s magical. It glows and
only he can see the glow so it
makes everything lighter. It lets
him see in the dark and figure
out where to put what
presents.”
Braedan
“Santa uses magic to make his
sled go and make the reindeer listen
to him so he has to wear the red suit.
It helps him make his magic. It acts
like a magic wand.”
Nicholas
“Santa’s sleigh and his suit both
hold magic, that’s why they’re red.
When something is magical it glows
that red colour.”
Kaden
“I don’t really know why Santa’s
suit is red, but it could be because
Christmas lights are red and he
wants people to remember he’s a
part of Christmas. He wouldn’t wear
the other colours because green
doesn’t look as good and white
would blend in to the snow too much
and get dirty.”
Miah
“Santa wears a red suit because
it’s a Christmas colour. He doesn’t
wear it because he wants to look like
he’s part of Christmas, but so he can
sneak around. The red helps him
camouflage himself with the reddecorations so no one can see him.”Brody N.
“Santa wears red for three
reasons: it’s the colour of Christmas,
it’s the colour of Canada and
Santa is a secret Canadian and
it’s a special dark red that can’t
be seen when he’s flying in the
sky.”
Cassidy
“I think Santa wears red because
it’s his favourite colour. Christmas
was made a red and green holiday
because of the Christmas trees and
Santa’s red suit.”
Jillian
“Santa wears a red suit becauseit’s a Christmas colour and the otherChristmas colours wouldn’t match.Green and white wouldn’t match
with his sled.”
Mikayla
“Santa wears red because it is the
better Christmas colour. It was a
Christmas colour first but then he
decided to use it.”
Paige
“Santa wanted to make Christmas
a red holiday, so he made everything
red. His suit is red and his sleigh is
red and that led to Christmas being a
red holiday.”
