Arnold Mathers knows a thing or three about Christmas Trees. Mathers, shown here cutting
down a tree on his tree lot north of Belgrave, has been providing a cut-your-own-tree
experience for families for seven years. (Denny Scott photo)

capacity we can handle while
maintaining the lot,” he said.
The business, more a way to meet
new people and have visits with old
friends than anything else, has
become a multi-generational
project.
“We have three generations
working here,” Mathers said. “I just
had my fourth grandson join the
team.”
The lot offers fir, scotch pine and
several other species of trees, but
Mathers said that most people are
looking for white spruce.
“When you think of a Christmas
tree, with the pointed top and the
triangular shape, that’s a white
spruce, it has the best shape,” he
said.
Since he began planting and
harvesting the trees, Mathers hasgathered an impressive arsenal oftree-cutting and moving equipment.
The accumulation of the equipment,
when he recently sat down and took
inventory, shocked him.
“That’s really the only surprise
I’ve run into since starting is how
much equipment I have,” he said.
He listed off more than half a
dozen kinds of machinations that he
has picked up over the years to make
the lot work.
“We have multiple chainsaws,
snowmobiles, sleds and a tractor as
well as ATVs for warmer weather to
move the trees,” he said. “We also
have a wood chipper to deal with theleftovers.”Unfortunately, the lot is closed
now, but will be open for the three
weekends before Christmas next
year.
“It’s become a real family spot for
my family and for other people,”
Mathers said. “We love the settler’s
log cabin and the lot.”
