Very generous
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee AA Lightning donated over $500 to a family from Goderich
that had lost their home and belongings in the tornado of Aug. 21 instead of having a gift
exchange this holiday season. The team made the donation to the family on Dec. 17. (Photo

Lightning struck twice more onthe weekend as the SaugeenMaitland Bantam AA Lightningshut out both the Cambridge
Roadrunners and the Kitchener
Lady Rangers.
On Saturday the girls travelled to
Cambridge to face the Roadrunners
and finish off a little Christmas
shopping. The Bolts came out hot,
scoring all three goals early and
coasting to a 3-0 win. Ashlee
Lawrence got things started, scoring
on a rebound off a Neve VanPelt
shot. Lexi Smith got the second
Lightning marker with assists going
to Miranda Lantz and call-up Mel
Nolan. Avery Reeves got credit for
the third goal on a strange play off a
face-off in the Cambridge end.
Morgan Baker stopped all shots toearn the shutout. Nolan and KaylaMcCabe both played well as call-ups from the Bantam A team.
Sunday’s match against Kitchener
was closer on the scoreboard, but
not in play. The Lightning peppered
the Ranger goalie with shots but had
difficulty finishing. Reeves scored
the only goal on a penalty shot.
Rebecca Ropp picked up the shut-
out in the 1-0 win.
The girls are looking forward to
spending a little down time with
their families over the holidays and
don’t have another game until Jan. 5
when the Cambridge Roadrunners
make a return trip to Howick.

SM Midgets take three of four
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning managed to take three out
of four points from two weekend
games in Lower Lake League
action.
On Saturday, the visiting
Lightning had to fight back from a
1-0 deficit with two third-period
goals to edge the Brantford Ice Cats
2-1.
The following day saw the first
place Lightning travel to Sarnia to
play the second place Sting. Again,
the Lightning fell behind early and
needed two goals from Owen
Sound’s Dollee Meigs to give the
Lightning a 2-2 tie.
Scoring for the Lightning in the
weekend games were Meigs (three)
and Hannah Davidson while assists
went to Brittany Butcher (three),
Davidson (three) and Abbey Gibson
with one.
Following the Christmas
weekend, the Lightning will be
heading to Mississauga to play in
the 31st Annual Christmas Classic.
Round robin opponents will
be Oakville, Mississauga and
Toronto.
The Blyth Bantam Girls squad
had two games recently. After
dropping a 5-0 decision to the
Kincardine Kinucks on Dec. 11, the
team fought to a 3-3 tie against
Normanby on Dec. 12.
Point getters were Ashley Higgins
with two unassisted goals, and
Mackenzie Nesbitt scoring from
Lauren Bedard.
The girls next participate in the
Milverton Royals Holiday
Challenge on Dec. 27-28 at the
Perth East Recreation Complex. The
squad starts the tournament with a
game against the Twin Centre
Hericanes on Dec. 27 at noon.
Following games are set for 9 p.m.
against the Mildmay Monarchs and
1 p.m. on Dec. 28 against the
hometown Milverton Royals.
Bantam girls drop, tie games
By Madelaine Higgins
We can feel the excitement for
Christmas building within the halls
of St. Anne’s Catholic Secondary
School. Our Advent project is
coming to an end as we have
donated hundreds and hundreds of
coats for our Aboriginal brothers
and sisters in Northern Ontario. On
Monday and Tuesday, Grade 11
religion classes went on retreat,
experiencing the faith and worship
sites of various temples in the
Kitchener area.
On Monday, swim team had a
practice at Vanastra and on Tuesday
the boys’ hockey team played in
Clinton. Junior and senior boys’
basketball teams hosted games at St.
Anne’s on Wednesday and the
curling team had a bonspiel at
Vanastra. Thursday, Dec. 15, the
swim team had a meet at the
Goderich YMCA and the girls
hockey team played in Clinton. The
senior girls had a volleyball game
on Thursday. Everyone enjoyed the
staff versus student basketball game
on Thursday.
The semi-formal dance was held
at St. Anne’s on Friday, Dec. 16
with the theme of “Neverland”.
Student cabinet worked hard to
organize the event and decorate the
school, as well as to welcome every
guest to “fly away” with them and
dance the night away. Snow cones
were sold as refreshments and
photos were taken as memorabilia
for the evening.
The school is hopeful that through
collecting toys and winter clothing,
every family in Huron County will
feel the Christmas spirit in 2011.
Students travelled to Huronview to
spread some Christmas cheer and
sing carols to the residents on
Tuesday. Student Cabinet continues
to plan the annual Christmas
assembly and for some special
lunch surprises on the last day of
school, Dec. 23.
We wish all of you peace and joy
as you prepare for Christmas!
