Location: Police Station Board Room Ironmen split games against Hanover, Mitchell Sports The Wingham Ironmen managed a split in their Western Junior C Hockey League contests on the weekend. After scoring a 10-2 decision over the Hanover Barons on Friday at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex, the Ironmen fell 2-1 to the Mitchell Hawks on Saturday in Mitchell. Aaron Armstrong enjoyed an eight-point game on Friday against the Barons. He scored one goal and picked up seven assists. Tyler Kellum had three goals and three assists while Wade Stephenson had three goals and one assist. Drew Shantz had a goal and two assists. Single goals were added by Dylan Williams and Blair McConnell. Justin Jacklin and Nic Carter each received two assists. Single helpers went to Joel Bowman, Travis Donaldson and Blair Goss. Brad Pitt scored both goals for Hanover. The Ironmen took a 4-0 lead in the first period and held a 7-0 advantage going into the third period. Wingham outshot Hanover 46-31 and was 5-11 on the power play. Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said the Ironmen played well but had to work to stay focused. “We had a pretty good start, we worked hard all game, but it’s tough those games when the other team isn’t into it,” he said. He said the power play was working pretty good, taking advantage of some two-man advantage situations. “We really didn’t work on it, we didn’t have a very good practice this week,” said Haggitt. “It’s been coming the past while. We’re improving on it.” Coach Haggitt said it was not the game he was expecting from Hanover. The last time the Ironmen were in Hanover, the Barons had a 5-0 lead and they blew it with Wingham winning 7-5. “We thought they’d come out flying tonight, we did not expect that type of game, but we’ll take the win for sure,” he said. Forward Evan Ducharme of Brussels said it did get rough out on the ice. With the teams fighting for second and third place, many thought it would be a good game, including the Ironmen players. “I thought it would be a fast-paced game, but it turned pretty rough and we got the score up on them,” he said. “We didn’t like that too much.” Ducharme said it was not the game he was expecting from the Barons. He said all four lines got to see a lot of ice time during the game and as a result all were contributing to the score. Bowman was the lone goal getter for the Ironmen on Saturday against Mitchell, assisting on the power play marker were Armstrong and Brett Brophy. Wingham outshot the Hawks 31- 28 and was 1-7 on the power play. The Ironmen played Goderich on Wednesday at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Game results were not available at press time. The Ironmen travel to Walkerton on Friday for an 8:30 p.m. contest against the Hawks. On Dec. 28 the Kincardine Bulldogs invade the Complex for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Ironmen. By Jim Brown The Citizen Breakaway The Wingham Ironmen split their pair of games over the weekend winning big against Hanover by a score of 10-2 and then coming up short against Mitchell by a score of 2- 1. (Jim Brown photo) Blyth Brussels PeeWees enter break with split games Coming up on their holiday break, the Blyth Brussels PeeWee AE team split their last two games of the calender year. Sunday, Dec. 18 the team travelled to Goderich to meet the Sailors. The Sailors would open the scoring quickly in the first and hold a 1-0 lead for quite some time until the Goderich goalie got caught out of his net and a clearing shot from Wyatt Machan slowly made its way into the Sailor net to tie the game. Goderich responded by regaining the lead soon after, but Avery McArter, off a pass from Nolan Johnston, would score knotting the game at 2-2. Blyth Brussels then took the lead on a pointshot from Machan for his second of the game. Jarron Thompson stood on his head making some great saves but the Sailors managed to finally sneak one by him to tie the game in the third. With four minutes remaining the Blyth Brussels team was in penalty trouble with two players in the box. However they succesfully killed the first two minutes of the penalty letting the fourth man back on the ice but the Sailors would eventually score with less than a minute to go after a scrum ensued in front of the Blyth Brussels net letting Goderich stuff in the loose puck for the lead and the win. The PeeWee AE team also took on the Mitchell Meteors Dec. 16 at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Centre. The PeeWee squad was keen to avenge their loss to the Meteors earlier in the season. Craig Raynard opened the scoring four minutes into the first period on a pass from Owen Andrews to take the lead. Both goaltenders would keep the game scoreless for most of the remainder of the game with Blyth Brussels Jeremy Wilts coming up big when it counted and holding Mitchell at bay. Jared Shearer would put the Meteors on ice scoring with five minutes remaining in the third for the 2-0 lead. The Blyth Brussles squad would hold on for the win. The boys wish forward Drew Van Wyk a speedy recovery as he’s out 4- 6 weeks with an upper body injury. The Blyth Brussels Peewee AEwould like to wish their parents, fans, and fellow community members safe and Happy Holidays. Recently Kirby and Derek Cook of Blyth participated in the “Wounded Warriors” Charity Hockey Tournament at CFB Petawawa. Although the hockey team went 0- 3 in the tournament they were happy to be a part of this commendable fundraiser. The independent, not- for-profit charity fund was established following a suicide bomb attack in 2006 that killed four Canadian soldiers and injured several others in Afghanistan. The fund was launched in recognition of the physical and emotional ordeal that the soldiers underwent while recuperating from their injuries. A great majority of wounds are non-visible, like that of post- traumatic stress disorder. These can go undiagnosed and untreated for along time. Woundedwarriors.ca firmly believes in changing attitudes towards this mindset within the military and among Canadians. Whether it is the cost of an unexpected flight for a family member to reach a wounded loved one or perhaps the purchase of a Segway personal transportation device for a wounded Canadian service member who has mobility challenges, woundedwarriors.ca continues to help families of the wounded with a variety of acceptable expenses. To donate to Wounded Warriors, you can send a cheque to Wounded Warriors, PO Box 141, Stn. Brooklin, Whitby, ON L1M 1B5. Blyth duo participate in charity tourney The Brussels Curling Club finished up the first draw of the year on the evening of Dec. 12. Over 40 curlers had a great first draw with many close games and a few runaway games. Sometimes it seems impossible to hit the broom, throw the right weight and give the rock the right turn – all on the same shot. The new curlers did very well and are catching on to the game and perfecting their throwing technique. The club will always welcome new curlers and folks can call Steve Steiss or Michael Alexander for information. Winners were: first, skip Murray Hoover, George Zwep, Norm Dobson and Liz Roth, 45 points; second, skip Doug Dale, MaryAnn Thompson, Reg Vinnicombe and Marilyn Jones, 44 points; third, skip Michael Alexander, Douwa Top, Karen Uhler and Tracy Swart, 41.5 points. The end of the draw was celebrated with wings and pizza and Christmas goodies. The new draw started on Dec. 19 and will continue after the Christmas break on Jan. 9. First draw finished in Brussels Novices tie Goderich On Saturday the Blyth Brussels Novice Local League team travelled to Goderich to take on the Sailors in a real nail-biter. The team played well together and Mitch Townsend managed to zip one through the pipes with the help of Liam Shortreed. Blyth Brussels kept the game interesting for the fans with the last three minutes of play in the third period as Goderich tried to squeeze one past the outstanding goaltender, Ty McNichol, who went home with a shutout. On Thursday, Dec. 15 the Novice team team travelled to Mitchell to come home with a tough 2-1 loss. The lone Blyth Brussels goal was scored by Tim Vincent unassisted. The team had many, many chances to score and even rang a bunch of the metal but couldn't fire one in. The team next takes to the ice on Dec. 24 at the Blyth and District Community Centre again taking on the Sailors. The puck drops at 10:30 a.m. TOWNSHIP OF NORTH HURON WINGHAM LANDFILL Regular Landfill Hours will be in place over the Holiday season Christmas Tree Chipping Program Please have your Christmas Trees to the curb by January 9, 2012 for collection.
