Keeping it musical
There was plenty of music to go around at the final annual Blyth Public School Christmas
concert on Dec. 14 at Memorial Hall. Singing it loud were, from left: Chad Ortman, Connor
Brooks, Greg McDonald, Jaden Shortreed, Kaila Nesbitt, Mandi Kerr, Ben Kolkman and
former student and special guest Joel Snell. (Vicky Bremner photo)

THE EDITOR,
Christmas 2011. We asked you to
open your wallets and your hearts
and you certainly did so, with
enormous generosity.
So, from the bottom of our hearts,
thank you for ‘gifting’ almost 500
families and over 1,000 Huron
County children this Christmas. We
are fortunate to be part of such a
caring community where giving and
receiving are seen as reciprocal
gifts, where volunteers spend
countless hours organizing your
generous donations, where we
have media who care and who get
the word out to the community each
year.
With gratitude and thanks to
everyone that supported us, Merry
Christmas to all!
Gail Grant
Huron County Christmas
Bureau.
On Tuesday, Nov. 29 Central
Huron Secondary School (CHSS)
hosted a Movember fundraising
shave-off auction with all proceeds
to go to Prostate Cancer Canada.
The students of CHSS
enthusiastically got into the spirit of
bidding and raised an amazing
$2,270 in only one hour.
Several male staff members and
students had let nature paint a
picture on their face for the month of
November, so there were many
moustaches and beards to be shaved
off.
Top bid of the day went to shave
Mr. Shore’s head. A surprise bid to
paint facial hair on the vice-
principal and principal’s face was a
crowd pleaser, so they also had the
chance to paint the face of our
student council president, Lexi
Cook and student council
representative, Amber Brodie. A
special thanks goes out to all those
brave boys and men of CHSS who
volunteered to be shaved for charity
in front of the entire student body.
Thanks to CHSS teacher Mr. Taylor
for lending us his auctioneer’s
voice.
Thanks to Joey Lawson for
creating the Prostate Cancer
slideshow that was shown before the
auction began. The goodwill,
friendly competition of bidding and
overall generosity of the students
of CHSS will not soon be
forgotten.
THE EDITOR,
Some time ago I heard someone
disputing the term “the Harper
Government”. It was adamantly
stated that the correct label is the
Government of Canada. I agreed
wholeheartedly at the time.
In recent days I have listened to
the “Kyoto” performance (or maybe
non-performance), the rescue
helicopter escapade, the jet to a
sports event business trip, the cross-
border agreement, the unjustified
support of Israel and others too
numerous to mention. I have now
come to the conclusion that it is the
Harper Government.
No true Canadian Government
would behave in this manner. Where
has the neutrality and self
respect gone? Canada has not
endeavoured to become a world
power and is now doing so in a
manner embarrassing to most
Canadian citizens.
The comment on Dec. 15
regarding our little Canadian flags
struck a point with me as I’m going
abroad this year and it had occurred
to me that this time I might not
flaunt my proudly-held nationality
that has been sullied by the Harper
Government.

THE EDITOR,
It is the law in Ontario that
smoke alarms be installed and
maintained in all residential
occupancies.
Starting Dec. 21 the Municipality
of Morris-Turnberry has made
available smoke alarms at a greatly
reduced price to its citizens.
Residents of Morris-Turnberry are
invited to visit the municipal office
and purchase the $8 smoke alarms
for use in their homes.
It’s the law to have smoke alarms
on every storey and outside all
sleeping areas. Smoke alarms should
be replaced every 10 years. Check
for signs of discolouration or poor
maintenance, replacing the smoke
alarm if needed.
The smoke alarms will be
available for pickup while supplies
last from the municipal office. So
hurry in to take advantage of this
opportunity to make your home
safer, protect your family from fire
and ensure you are compliant with
the law.
