Over the past few years, the use of candles in the home has greatly increased — and so has the number of fires caused by candle misuse. The Ontario fire service offers the following tips for the safe use of candles. Secure your candles in sturdy holders and, if possible, place glass chimneys or shades on them. Keep lit candles out of the reach of children and pets. and well away from any combustible materials. An unattended candle is an invitation to disaster, so don't forget to snuff out your candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Remember to keep all matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children. After all the buying and selling was done, there were plenty of snacks to be eaten. (Jim Brown photo) At the BranchBranch hosts Christmas partiesBy Jo-Ann McDonaldMerry Christmas to all and all the best in the new year from everyone at the Brussels Legion Branch. The past week has been busy around the Branch celebrating the Christmas season with family and friends. On Monday, Dec. 12 evening the Branch catered to the Lion’s Club Christmas meeting. The members, along with their wives, enjoyed a traditional turkey dinner and a lovely evening. Music, a guest speaker, a sing-a-long of Christmas carols made for a wonderful night for all. Helping the Branch in catering duties included Linda Bird, Jo-Ann McDonald, Mary Bradshaw and Mabel Glanville. On Dec. 13 the Brussels Cadet Corps held its annual Christmas dinner for the Cadets and their families. There were nearly 100 people enjoying the meal of roast beef and ham provided by the Parent Support Committee. The Thursday night darts had 10 darters taking aim at the boards. Winners were: first, Gord Jacklin and Sandra Josling; second, John Stadelmann and Marlene Rutledge; high shot, Glen Zehr, 121; high finish, John, 100; second skunk of season, Sheron Stadelmann, Wayne Smith and Glen Zehr. A Christmas fun night of darts will be held this week and regular play will continue through the holidays. The Friday night supper of wings, fries and salads were enjoyed by a nice crowd of around 25. The mealwas available from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m. and the meat draws began at 6 p.m. A few happy people became winners before they left. The draws continued throughout the evening and parents and players of the Blyth Brussels PeeWee hockey team dropped by after their hockey practice. They enjoyed wings and fries and the draws. Comrades helping out for the evening doing the draws were Lisa Glanville, Linda Bird and Jo-Ann McDonald and helping with the cooking were Sandra Josling and Jim and Chris Brown. A special surprise for the evening was a visit by Santa and Mrs. Claus. They wished everyone a Merry Christmas and good luck. Santa was even a lucky winner of a prize or two. Saturday was busy at the Branch with the group catering a Christmas dinner for the Humphries family at the Highland apartments. The group provided a roast beef dinner for the 24 members of the family. The area churches now have all the advent weeks covered: hope, peace, joy and love. Like the Bethlehem story of many, many years ago, today we add our own details to make the story current and liveable. The base story never changes. We all live our lives in hope, hope for a better tomorrow for the world. We try to share peace and joy with those in our midst and we do this in various and often unique ways. And most important we live love, love of partners, love for family and friends and in this season we try to spread our love into the world. The very idea of gift giving makes it acceptable to tell the world you love them. So the ancient story starts in Bethlehem with God giving us a brand new baby, and we continue to spread that word as we share our blessings with the world. We’re in the home stretch; we’re just “sleeps” away from the much- anticipated time of the year. For those who put their tree up in November, their destination day is Dec. 25 and with Dec. 26 decluttering begins. For someone who enjoys the season – Advent is over on Dec. 24 and the 12 days of Christmas begin. Gatherings, reunions and meal sharing continue as we make our way towards the new year 2012 and the continuation of hope, peace, joy and love. Baking, cooking and getting ready for company are all part of the fun of the season. When these events can be shared, it’s much better. I happened to catch the Thompson girls putting the finishing touches on some very handsome reindeer. I’m not sure who looked happier, Grandma Lois or Paul’s three daughters. It’s surprising what a chocolate pretzel and smarties do to a plain cookie. Caledon was the place to be on Saturday if you started life as a Castator, or are a friend of one.
