The Huron County Board of
Health is asking the province to
increase the number of families who
can use the Healthy Smiles Ontario
program.
The program gives free dental
services to children who are 17 years
and under from families who do not
have dental coverage and earn less
than $20,000 a year (Adjusted
Family Net Income). The program is
offered through the Huron County
Health Unit and local dentists. The
Health Unit works with the Social
Services department at the county to
help residents through the
application process.
Medical Officer of Health Dr.
Nancy Cameron says they would
like to see the province increase the
income level to $30,000 so more
families living with lower incomes
can qualify. They also are asking the
Ontario Ministry of Health and
Long-Term Care to expand the
program’s services to include
parents of children who qualify.
Cameron says while over 80
Huron County children have had
free dental services so far, they
would like to see more families have
access. “Dental health is important
to overall health. We want to see
more residents be able to get these
services free.”
The Board is writing a letter to the
province to advocate for the
changes. Several health units in the
province have written similar letters.
A makeover of Listowel District
Secondary School (LDSS) is set to
begin following the Ministry of
Education's approval of Phase 1 of
the multi-phase multi-year $4.1
million dollar upgrade.
The board set about creating an
overall capital plan in which
renovations would be done in
phases. Phase 1 is the first step in a
joint effort between the Board and
the Ministry to increase overall
capacity and improve facilities.
Sierra Construction, the general
contractor for Phase 1, will be
meeting with Board Facilities
representatives and renovations will
begin shortly. Phase 1 of the project
includes alterations to the art room,
music room and fashion design area.
These renovations include
mechanical and electrical upgrades
at a cost of $686,305.50.
Planning for Phase 2, which
includes an addition to the front of
the school, is underway with
completion set for August-
September 2012. When the Phase 2
planning is finalized, the Board will
work on defining the scope for Phase
3. This Phase will encompass
enclosing the court yard and creating
additional classroom spaces. The
phases to follow include work to
relocate Student Services, address
kitchen/cafeteria spaces and work in
the library to create two additional
classrooms.
When all phases of this project are
complete, 77 new pupil places will
have been created. The balance of
the required spaces is being
addressed through the addition of
portables. Specialized classrooms
will be altered to make them more
current and enhance the curriculum
delivery at the same time making
some specialized rooms available for
regular classroom use.
Accessibility issues at the front
entrance will be addressed as well as
building code and fire safety issues
in and around the cafeteria, common
area and the hallway near the main
gym. The main office and guidance
office will be reorganized to provide
full visibility to students and the
public entering the building.
