NEWS
FROM BELGRAVE
Morris-Turnberry has
credit from beginning of
2011 police costs
Morris-Turnberry councillors
learned at their Dec. 6 meeting that
they have a credit for police costs for
the first half of 2011.
Under its agreement with the
Ontario Provincial Police, the
municipality pays in advance for
policing costs on a semi-annual
basis. From Jan. 1 to June 30
Morris-Turnberry had been billed
for $136,260 in services, but some
of the officers who were to have
worked in the municipality were on
duty elsewhere during the period.
Only $119,614 in services were
provided, leaving Morris-Turnberry
with a credit of $16,646.
***
Council completed an agreement
which will allow chief building
officials from Morris-Turnberry and
North Huron to fill in for each other
as needed.
***
Council approved the revised
municipal alcohol policy which
applies primarily to Bluevale Hall.
***
Courts of Revision for the
Breckenridge and Evans Municipal
Drains were held with no appeals.
***
Council endorsed a resolution
from the County of Huron that
private woodlot owners should be
eligible for funding from the Ontario
Disaster Relief Assistance Program
for losses caused to their woodlot
from events such as August’s
Goderich-area tornado and that the
changes should be retroactive to the
date of that tornado.
Council also supported the
county’s resolution objecting to
restrictions from the Ontaro Fire
Marshal on the use of farm buildings
for public events.
***
Mayor Paul Gowing expressed
satisfaction with the outcome of a
judicial hearing that ruled the
representation at Huron County
Council of four municipalities
including North Huron, Huron East
and Central Huron, should each be
reduced by one member because of
fewer electors on the voting list.
“It’s unfortunate it took an action
such as that,” Gowing said of the
judicial action brought by Morris-
Turnberry and other municipalities.
