THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2011.Sports Atom Reps win two, get knocked out of tournament The Blyth Brussels Atoms recorded two wins, but were unable to qualify for the playoff round of the Wingham Regional Atoms Silver Stick tournament held last week. Minto and Flesherton finished tied atop their group with five points each so one was the group’s winner and the other team was the wildcard for the C division of the tournament. Blyth Brussels played their first game on Dec. 5 at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex against Teeswater and scored a 5-1 victory. Ethan Scrimgeour paced the win with two goals and an assist. Bailey Bos had a goal and an assist while Jacob Roth and Ethan Coultes netted single goals. Colin Howson and Tanner Boven had two assists each. In the team’s second game, played Saturday morning at the Blyth Community Centre, Blyth Brussels fell 1-0 to Plattsville. Jeremy Wilkins netted the only goal of the game for the locals. Bailey Bos had three goals and an assist and Ethan Scrimgeour netted three goals as Blyth Brussels scored an 8-3 decision over Bruce Peninsula in a game played Saturday afternoon in Blyth. Alex Coultes chipped in with two goals and an assist. Colin Howson had four assists with Jacob Roth picking up two helpers. Tanner boven and Jacob Gulutzen had one assist each. Nathan Naves had three goals for Bruce Peninsula. Blyth Brussels coach Jeff Howson said the team played very well. “They played well as a team, they moved the puck well,” he said. “They played aggressive, they played strong.” He added they played with heart and character and that the 1-0 loss to Plattsville was a heartbreaker. “They tried hard and it’s all part of hockey and when you’re a strong team and aggressive it seems to catch you that much harder,” he said. Howson also said he was proud of the way the team played. He indicated the players have grown as a team since the beginning of the season and their skills sets are working amazingly. “We’re not only seeing that as coaches, but other people from other centres are coming up and talking about their skills set, and how they’re playing,” he said. “Their lines are matched really well and how they’re playing with confidence and they’re really improving.” The coach said they were disappointed they didn’t advance to the playoff round. In the B division championship, South Huron defeated Twin Centre 3-2 in overtime. Jacob Ryan netted the winner in the first extra period. Nolan Regier and Joel Denotter also scored. Griffin Hergott and Aidan Krueger scored for Twin Centre. In semi-final play South Huron defeated Listowel 8-2 and Twin Centre edged Mitchell 4-3. Jacob Ryan scored three goals for South Huron and Cam Beckett added a pair. Single goals were added by Hannah Tait, Nick Bedard and Joel Denotter. Riley Kuepfer and Eric Vendereyk scored for Listowel. Griffin Hergott scored a pair of goals for Twin Centre. Single goals were scored by Ben Bauer and Burt Sherrer. Parker Solomon had two assists. Scoring for Mitchell were Jarrett Vogels with two and Jacob Rauser with one. In the B division consolation championship, Listowel defeated Mitchell 4-1. Eric Vandereyk scored two goals for Listowel with single markers added by Sam Town and Brett Reeser. Tanner Dietz replied for Mitchell. In the C division championship, Minto shut out Flesherton 2-0, with all the scoring being done in the third period. Parker Miller and Josh Gray scored the goals and Drew Richardson recorded the shutout in the Minto net. In semi-final play Minto defeated Plattsville 6-2 and Flesherton downed Arthur 6-2. Parker Miller had three goals and an assist for Minto and Tyson Koopman had two goals and a pair of assists. Noah Aitken netted a single goal. Scoring for Plattsville were Jeremy Wilkens and Kyle Goodhew. Avery Rowe netted a pair of goals for Flesherton and singles were tallied by Eric Black, Tyler Hooker, Casey Mann and Travis Verbeek. Quincy Alexander and Blair Geddes replied for Arthur. In the C division consolation championship, Plattsville doubled up Arthur 4-2. Scoring for Plattsville were Kyle Goodhew, Joel Becker, Ian Glendinning and Nathan Knechtel. Replying for Arthur were Bryan Richardson and Joel Richardson. Both Minto and South Huron advance to the international Silver Stick tournaments being played in Forest next month. Results of the game played in Blyth on Saturday were Listowel 4, Mount Forest 2, Blyth Brussels 0, Plattsville 1, Teeswater 5, Bruce Peninsula 8, Twin Centre 1, Hanover 0, South Huron 7, Walkerton 0, Arthur 10, Lucknow 0, Blyth Brussels 8, Bruce Peninsula and Plattsville 6, Teeswater 0. On Monday, Dec. 5 the daytime curlers picking up wins were Wendell Stamper, Les Shaw, Mac Inglis, Lynn Hickey, Norm Fairles and Hugh Clugston. The Tuesday ladies saw sisters Kelsie and Jill Eadie skip their teams to wins with Leanne Elston also victorious. The Tuesday competitive league had Earl Fitch curl his team to victory and Bill DeVos and Jim Ross settled for a tie. The Wednesday mixed teams picking up wins were Rob Middleton, Scott Bridge and Jenn Elston. The Thursday family league winners were Bill McDonald and Doug Miller. The Belgrave league teams going home with wins were Murray McNichol, Fred Meier, John Nixon and Murray Shiell. The Thursday daytime curlers had five games go down to the final rock. Skips going home with wins were Clayt Ruppel, Barry Simpson, Lynn Hickey, Hugh Clugston, Norm Fairles and Bob Johnston. Friday night mixed winning skips were Murray Fear and Bill McDonald. On Saturday the dining lounge was the host of the Edgar Christmas party. Over 60 family members came out to celebrate with even a surprise visit from Santa himself.
