Teaching quietly
Heather Decker was on teaching duty last Friday at Blyth
Public School, as she often is, but she had taken a vow of
silence, so the day’s lesson was a little different than it
usually might have been. She used a projection screen and
Microsoft Word to get her point across while Lucas
Townsend looks on. Well over $1,200 was raised for Kids
Giving Water, which put the school over the top of its
fundraising goal, meaning that enough money has been
raised to build a clean water well in Kenya. (Shawn Loughlin

FROM BLYTH
‘The Candle of Joy’ lit at church
Greeting worshippers at Blyth
United Church on the third Sunday
of Advent, Dec. 11 were Brenda
Brooks and Nicole Kerr. Ushering
were Brenda Brooks, Nicole Kerr,
Lori Brooks and Terry Richmond.
Lynda MacGregor was organist.
Flowers at the front of the church
were in memory of Tyler Wilson
placed by his family; Don Craig,
David and Annie Craig, Charlie and
Winnie Johnston, placed by Marilyn
Craig and family; JoyceCunningham, June Bradley andDoris Carter, placed by Lois andCon vanVliet.Rev. Gary Clark welcomed
everyone to church and drew
everyone’s attention to the
announcements in the bulletin.
Special mention was that the Sunday
School will have its Christmas
concert next Sunday, Dec. 18 at 11
a.m. The UCW will be making pies
again next month – turkey pies on
Jan. 11 and beef pies on Jan. 25. If
you wish to order call Joanne
MacDonald 519-523-9274. She will
gladly add your name to the list.
Lighting the third Advent Candle,
“The Candle of Joy” were Joann
MacDonald and her grandsons,
Braden and Kaeden MacDonald.
The first three verses of the hymn
“Hope is a Star” was sung. The call
to worship with the responsive
singing of “O Come, O ComeEmmanuel” was followed by theprayer of approach. The children were asked to cometo the front of the church for their
story time. Rev. Clark asked the
children what they saw on the table
at the front. Many answers were, the
nativity scene. He then asked them
to look at the faces of the statues and
see if they thought that they were
feeling joy.
The reason that they are joyful was
because of the birth of Jesus. Jesus
points us to God and His love for all
of us. Rev. Clark asked the children
to remember that Christmas isn’t all
about presents but also about the
birth of Jesus.
Everyone said a prayer along with
the congregation and Rev. Clark.
The children went downstairs for
their time of fellowship. The next

We are sorry to hear that Jim

Happy birthday to Bill Bromley

It’s the season for celebrations.
The Edgar family had their annual
Christmas get-together this past
Saturday, Dec. 9 at the Wingham
Golf and Curling Club, hosted by
Niel and Cathy Edgar, Donna and
Roger Bieman and Murray and
Tammi Edgar. Everyone enjoyed a
turkey dinner. We were missing one
very special person, Irlma Edgar
was unable to attend as she was in
hospital. Special guests were Helen
Stonehouse of Braemar Nursing
Home and Mait and Mary Edgar of
Petrolia.
While waiting for Santa to appear
everyone joined in singing
Christmas carols. Santa arrived and
gave everyone a gift. This year we
had two new babies and three new
girlfriends and boyfriends joined
the Edgar clan. After Santa we all
enjoyed a few games of Bingo.
There were 68 members attending
from Atwood, Aylmer, Barrie,
Belgrave, Blyth, Clinton, Goderich,
London, Lucknow, Petrolia,
Tavistock, Toronto and Wingham.
Don’t forget there is no euchre at

Students beat fund goal
Euchre
done until
new year

Staff was overwhelmed by the
effort students made to raise money
for Kids Giving Water. We only
needed $1,400 to reach our goal but
students and teachers kept silent for
the whole day and raised a grand
total of $1,838. Congratulations
everyone!
One student was heard saying
when she left on Thursday that
Friday would be a fun day as all we
would do would be to watch movies.
Not so … Blyth Public School
teachers are trickier than that.
Mrs. Armstrong made sure
learning continued by using a live

(2) For another thing, read the Bible with an earnest desire to understand it.Do not
think for a moment, that the great object is to turn over a certain quantity of printed
paper, and that it matters nothing whether you understand it or not. Some ignorant
people seem to imagine, that all is done if they advance so many chapters every day,
though they many not have a notion what they are all about, and only know that they
have pushed on their bookmark ahead so many pages. This is turning Bible reading into
a mere ritual form. Settle it down in your mind as a general principle, that a Bible not
understood--is a Bible that does no good! Say to yourself often as you read, “What is
this all about?” Dig for the meaning like a man digging for gold.
