fewer councillors
Looking it over
A silent auction was one of the main attractions at Saturday night’s fundraiser for Blyth resident
Jim Johnston who was seriously injured in the Aug. 21 tornado in Goderich. The event featured
a silent auction, as well as a live auction and it raised thousands of dollars for Johnston, who
has been unable to work for months. (Jim Brown photo)

representation will be based on
population. It states that every
municipality is granted one
representative to start and then
another representative for every
4,000 residents thereafter.
The population numbers are based
on figures provided by the
Municipal Property Assessment
Corporation (MPAC) as stated by
the Municipal Act handed down by
the provincial government.
“That bylaw will be law until it’s
changed,” Stewart said.
Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn
then asked if any of the decisions
made by council in 2011 would be
considered invalid as a result of the
decision. Stewart said that wasn’t
the case and that it wasn’t even part
of the case.
“That was specifically left out,”
Stewart said.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek then
said he was “disappointed” that the
decision had to go as far as it had.
He said it should have been
officially addressed at the time of
the election and didn’t see why it
wasn’t.
Van Diepenbeek said that the four
municipalities that lost
representatives just a few weeks ago
were under the impression they
were going to lose those councillors
after the 2010 election, but all of a
sudden news came back saying that
wasn’t true.
“It should have never gone to a
judge,” Van Diepenbeek said. “It
should have come back to county
council if anything.”
Van Diepenbeek said the
decision has taken some experience
away from council, despite his
being on the side opting to remove
the four representatives from
