Local families dealing with loss
The sadness of losing a loved one
has touched the lives of two local
families. Our sympathies are
extended to the McCallum family on
the passing of Harold McCallum.
He will be missed by his wife Pearl
and children Paul, Marion, Ron,
Joyce and Carl and their families.
Harold was a farmer and an avid
fisherman and hunter. He loved to
spend time at his home away from
home on Manitoulin Island with his
family and many friends. He loved
to travel and enjoyed many
vacations to the south with members
of the family. On my visits to the
McCallum home, it was always a
time of interesting and fun
conversation with Harold and
Pearl. My condolences to all the
family.
Our sympathies are extended to
the family of the late Judy
Thompson. Our condolences to her
husband Gene and children Larry
and Dan and their families. She was
a pleasant little lady who had just
enjoyed a trip to California before
her sudden death. She will be missed
by her good friends Leona and
Twyla and many more. Our
condolences to the extended family
and friends.
The Brussels ladies’ birthday club
met on Thursday at noon at JR’s to
enjoy the monthly party. The
birthday girls were Betty Campbell
and Olga Speiran. Olga was
celebrating her 85th birthday. The
group enjoyed a delicious dinner
and visiting with everyone.
Attending the party included the
birthday girls and friends Isabel
Wheeler, Betty McCutcheon,
Sandra Cable, Dale Chesher, Mary
Bryans, Audrey Cardiff, Jane Hall,
Rene Richmond, Bev Palmer, Liz
Coultes, Laura Barbour, Alice
Marks, Leona Armstrong and
Marg Work. Happy birthday to
the girls.
The Walton Hall was the venue for
a family Christmas. The family was
from Blyth and thought the hall was
a great place and would recommend
it to all.

FROM WALTON
Rain, rain go away – but it is better
than snow! There is no shovelling
involved with the rain, but some
people have been experiencing water
coming in the basements and such.
There was as much water as there
was this spring, with the rivers and
creeks running full and overflowing
the banks. Of course, when you mix
water with cold weather, you can get
treacherous driving weather. A
couple of mornings last week the
roads were a little slushy and
slippery and there were a few cars in
the ditch, as well as accidents. Don’t
forget to leave extra time and slow
down.
Rick McDonald spent the last
weekend in Vancouver attending the
Grey Cup. He joined his brother Neil
and nephew Mike from Calgary,
along with two friends to enjoy theweekend festivities and the game. The B.C. Lions were playing againstWinnipeg Blue bombers, so Neilthought it was great, his team was
playing. They spent time visiting the
different team venues, enjoyed
dinner together on Saturday evening,
watching the game and celebrating
the victory. Rick returned home on
Monday evening and reports having
a great time. He says the $65 million
renovation of the B.C. stadium is
really something to see and a very
comfortable setting to watch sports
events. The new roof is retractable in
the centre, so even if open and
raining, spectators will still be dry. A
huge state-of-the-art viewing screen
was easily 100-feet square and clear
as a bell. It was a great time and they
look forward to next year’s Grey
Cup.
This is the second week of deer
hunting and there are still a couple of
days to go. Keep your eyes open and
watch for the fast-moving creatures.
On Monday morning, the first day, I
did not see any bright orange coats
anywhere along my drive. Usually,
you see trucks parked along the
sideroads and hunters near the
bushes, but not this first morning.
I’m sure I will see some by the endof the week.Congratulations to Elunid McNairon becoming a great-grandmotherfor the first time. Elunid’s
granddaughter, Jana and husband
Kalen Carroll are the proud parents
of a new son, Kessler. Elunid was
very pleased to have been able to
hold him before he was even a week
old.
A few area folks have been not so
lucky in the past few weeks. Brian
Workman has suffered a broken hip
and had surgery on Monday, We
wish him a speedy recovery. Brody
Ten Pas has suffered a broken
arm/wrist and is expected to have
surgery. We hope he recovers
quickly. Jacob McGavin suffered a
concussion playing hockey and we
hope he comes along quickly. I have
seen a few other folks with casts and
crutches around town and
hope everyone is coming along for
all.
A recent patient in Clinton
Hospital is Isabelle Craig. She
suffered a fall and is recovering in
hospital and is going to a
nursing/retirement home in Clinton
for further recovery. We hope she is
improving.
