Nice save
The Wingham Ironmen welcomed their new goalie (number one) Jeff Puddephat from
Kitchener to the team by having him start the team’s Dec. 2 game against Mitchell at the North
Huron Wescast Community Complex in Wingham. Puddephat came through, however, with
the Ironmen taking the contest by a score of 4-2. (Jim Brown photo)
New Ironmen keeper earns the W in his home opener
The Wingham Ironmen picked up
four points on the weekend in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play, posting wins over Mitchell and
Goderich.
Tyler Kellum picked up three
assists Friday evening as the
Ironmen doubled up the Mitchell
Hawks 4-2 in a game played at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex.
Travis Donaldson opened the
scoring at 18:38 of the first period
with Kellum and Drew Shantz
assisting.
Wade Stephenson made the score
2-0 at the 45-second mark of the
second period with Aaron
Armstrong and Blair Goss getting
the assists. The Hawks scored at
12:18 of the middle period and
tallied at 5:48 of the third period to
tie the score at two.
Nic Carter scored at 12:37 of the
third period to give the Ironmen a 3-
2 lead. Shantz and Kellum assisted.
Armstrong netted the insurance
marker at 19:34 as he scored an
empty-net marker on the power
play.
The Ironmen outshot the Hawks
38-25 and were 1-2 on the power
play. Only two penalties were called
in the game, both to Mitchell.
Recently-acquired netminder Jeff
Puddephat of Kitchener picked up
the win in the net.
Ironmen coach Chad Haggitt of
Blyth said it was a good game, a
good battle all the way through.
“Jeff played great in net,” he said.
“It was the first game for him
playing for us, he played
phenomenal, he made some pretty
big stops to keep us in it.”
“We just kept battling,” said
Haggitt.
Puddephat was acquired from the
Strathroy Rockets of the Western
Junior B Hockey League.
According to Haggitt he gives the
Ironmen an excellent goaltender to
play.
“He’s quick, he’s big, said the
coach. “He sees the puck well, he’s
just a good goalie.
Four members of the Ironmen
played in the all-star game on
Sunday in Hanover. The four are
Stephenson of Brussels, Armstrong,
Joel Bowman and Brett Brophy.
Stephenson said it was a clean
game with just two penalties being
called. He said he expected Mitchell
to be playing harder than they were
as they are usually a bit quicker.
“We didn’t play our best game
tonight, so it was nice to come out
with the W,” he said.
Donaldson scored three goals
Saturday evening as the Ironmen
posted an 8-1 decision over the
Goderich Sailors at the Maitland
Recreation Centre. Armstrong had a
goal and five assists. Stephenson
had a goal and two assists and Phil
Boertien netted a pair of goals.
Brophy had one goal and an assist.
Kellum picked up two helpers.
Wingham outshot the Sailors 39-
28 and were 2-15 in the penalty-
filled contest.
Due to the Wingham Atom
Regional Silver Stick being played
this week, the Ironmen have only
one game and it is on the road. The
Ironmen travel to Mitchell on
Saturday for a 7:15 p.m. contest
against the Hawks.
