THE EDITOR,
Re: “Fire Marshal’s office clarify
regulations” as reported in ‘The
Citizen’ on Dec. 1.
In my opinion a number of
government agencies have make
work programs to justify their
existence and expansion.
Mr. Evered states there are people
holding private parties in farm
settings for between 300 and 600
people where admission is charged.
Where is the Liquor Control
Board of Ontario?
The County of Huron and
townships have Land Use By-laws
governing land use.
The Townships would not be
responsible if a property owner
entered into this entertainment
business unless first the Township
was aware of the operation
and second they did not enforce
the existing Land Use Regulations.
The Fire Marshal’s office is trying
to intimidate the local municipal
councils. The Fire Marshal’s office
want all fire departments to have
full-time fire chiefs.
These regulations will help to
justify their necessity and their
workload.
Fire chiefs in cities earn $100,000
in addition to benefits. If the local
fire chiefs become union members,
look out taxpayers.
If necessary, the County of Huron
could pass a bylaw disallowing
commercial entertainment activities
on farm properties unless they were
properly licensed. This would solve
the problem. This would fall
under the County By-law officer’s
duties.
The private property owner who
has private personal parties on their
property would be totally
responsible for any liability on their
property and off.
I do believe we have too much of
big brothers’ hand in our
pocketbook.
Yours truly,
Barry Currie, Brussels.
THE EDITOR,
In the past several weeks my
office has been overwhelmed with
phone calls and e-mails regarding
the Canadian Auto Workers Union
(CAW) wind turbine at the Family
Education Centre. Last week, I had
the pleasure of meeting with
members of Saugeen Turbine
Operation Policy (S.T.O.P.)
and the Director of the CAW to
ensure I was fully informed on this
issue.
The provincial government has
not adequately addressed the health
concerns surrounding industrial
wind turbines near residential
homes. The CAW is ignoring the
wishes of the community by
building an industrial wind turbine
as close as 150 metres to residential
property. Although this issue
falls under the jurisdiction of
the provincial government I am
calling on the CAW to be good
neighbours, listen and compromise
with the community of Saugeen
Shores.
First and foremost, the CAW
needs to hold an open public
meeting to honour the community
consultation process outlined in the
Green Energy Act, a step that has
not been taken or offered to the
community to date.
Secondly, the CAW should be
willing to compromise with the
community and find a mutually-
agreeable solution. There are a
number of alternatives the CAW
could propose including installing
solar panels, striving to adopt
Leadership in Energy and
Environmental Design (LEED)
certification for their buildings or
relocate the wind turbine to an
alternate location away from
residential areas.
Saugeen Shores is a beautiful
place to live. This issue has already
had a negative impact on people in
the community. It would be
unfortunate if this turbine was to
negatively affect people’s way of
life and their health.
I am urging the CAW to be a good
neighbour and work with the
residents and council in Saugeen
Shores to find a mutually-agreeable
solution.
Sincerely,
Ben Lobb, MP
Huron Bruce.
THE EDITOR,
I am enjoying the ‘Christmassy’
feeling when I drive through the
towns of Huron County. The lamp-
post decorations, the lights and other
festivities are arousing the sense that
Christmas is around the corner. For
many this is an exciting time,
watching the children with
eagerness and wonderment as they
anticipate the season of school
dramas, musical events, vacations,
making secret lists and ‘checking
them many times’ to make sure they
have the perfect gift for their loved
ones.
Huron Hospice Volunteer Service
also wants to observe the season
with those who might not be feeling
the spirit of celebration this year –
hurting … possible because of the
death of a loved one, the sadness of
family not able to join them, the
issues around this summer’s
storm…whatever the reason, grief
cannot be ignored.
Grief is not a respecter of time or
age. We all have losses with which
to manage.
Huron Hospice is offering a “time
of reflection” for anyone wishing to
remember their loved one. Please
come, share a memory of and enjoy
some refreshments with volunteers
of hospice and others who are
hurting.
There are three locations from
which to choose. Drop in when it
suits you.
• Seaforth – Tuesday, Dec.13, 6 to
9 p.m., Northside United Church,
(54 Goderich Street West)
• Goderich – Wednesday, Dec. 14,
1 to 4 p.m., Knox Presbyterian
Church, (9 Victoria Street North)
• Wingham – Thursday, Dec. 15, 5
to 7:30 p.m., Wingham Library (281
Edward Street)
Huron Hospice also has a
Memory Tree set up in the Wingham
Hospital, Terrace Room and the
Seaforth Hospital. You can bring a
special memento to hang on the tree,
or use one provided. Come and stop
a while, remember, reflect, perhaps
write a short memory of your loved
one in the Book of Memories.
We hope you will feel welcome to
come and ‘remember’ in whatever
way may bring comfort to you.
Yours truly,
Kathy Procter, Manager
Volunteers & Programs.
