Scott Woods Band plays Brussels church fundraiserIf Christmas is all about giving,we got off to a good start this week.Church services in our area weregood places to view generosity.Bundles in white were brought to church, making it mysterious.People shop and bring their treasuresso that a stranger can have a betterChristmas. As part of the worship, gifts are offered, then later transported to the Christmas Bureau. These combined gifts are ready to goto the right homes, makingChristmas just a little better. Oh yesthe gift of Christmas continues. At our United Church, the SundaySchool kids reviewed the symbols ofChristmas as they decorated the treeand windows with angels, stars, candy canes, bells and balls with
great enthusiasm. Sometimes we
forget why we do certain things and
so for the adults it was a good
reminder of the reasons for our
decoration choices. Of course we
had lunch after.
Music is a big part of Christmas
and so tunes are being shared all
around. Scott Woods was at the
Presbyterian Church on Saturday
setting off the season with some
lively tunes.
On Sunday the Blyth Festival
Singers presented, “A Yuletide
Garland” at Clinton United Church
to an appreciative crowd. Their
conductor Robert Blackwell set the
bar pretty high as they covered
several musical styles with
precision. An added treat was having
10 members of the Blyth Festival
Orchestra play under the baton of
Sean Kim. The calibre of both
groups was wonderful, giving
several moments of bliss. The new
accompanist Laura McAlpine
settled right into her new position
and Colleen Maguire on handbells
and Josh House on guitar each added
their specialty for some great
entertainment.
Next Sunday they’re offering it
again in Goderich at the
Presbyterian Church. That could be
a tough call for you, as our local
church choirs have their concert next
Sunday as well.
So this time of Advent can be
quite exciting, all the waiting and the
preparing. Thoughts and plans for
the next 20 days are just part of each
day. Children getting ready for
concerts, planning present
purchases and the general
excitement of children can be very
contagious, so make time to spend
time with them.

At the Branch
White retires from Brussels Branch
By Jo-Ann McDonald
It was a good week at the Brussels
Legion Branch and everyone had a
chance to rest up from last
weekend’s busy events. We said
goodbye to Melody White on Friday
night, her last shift working at the
Branch. Melody has been a delight
to work with and a great help at the
Branch for the last year and some; a
smiling face behind the bar and
always a quick wit. We wish her
well in her future and hope she will
drop by to say hello once in a while.
We welcome the new face of Julie
Hamilton to the bar staff. Julie lives
in Brussels and has experience to
bring to the job. We hope she will
get to meet many of the Comrades
of the Branch, so drop in to meet
Julie.
The last early-bird membership
draw has Charlie Procter winning
his dues for 2013. Members
dropping in to pay their dues will
now pay the little higher fee of $50.
The early-bird response was fairly
good, but Comrades are encouraged
to pay their dues by the end of
December. New members are
always welcome and are encouraged
to drop in and pick up an application
form.
The 140th anniversary committee
met at the Legion on Wednesday
evening. Plans are well underway
for the New Year’s Day Levee to be
held at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre. An
afternoon of fun for the whole
family is being planned and we hope
all come out and enjoy. Food, fun,
skating, wild west and cowboy jest
to kick off the 140th anniversary
party coming this summer. Mark the
calendar and plan to attend.
Winners of the Thursday night
darts were: first, Bush Whittard and
Sandra Josling; second, Sharon
Robins, Greta Zehr and Roger
McHardy; high shot, Sandra Josling,
136 and Gord Jacklin, 131.
The Friday night supper of ham
and scalloped potatoes was enjoyed
by a good crowd of nearly 35. This
Friday will be roast pork.
NEWS
FROM BRUSSELS
Simmons presented
honorary membership
“Winds of Change” was the theme
for the Melville Presbyterial WMS
Fall Rally held recently at Melville
Presbyterian Church in Brussels.
There was a warm time of
fellowship with delicious desserts
prepared by the Brussels group.
Mary Robinson, Literature
Secretary from Molesworth,
brought a good selection of books
for the group’s perusal and
purchase.
The day’s guest speaker was
Linda Shaw from Simcoe. She
spoke of her mission ministry in
Guyana along with her husband,
Rev. Ian Shaw. She emphasized that
we all have a story to tell. We must
tell our children and grandchildren
about the love of God. The
Presbyterian Church in Canada
established the first Guyana Church
and started schools called
“Canadian Mission Schools” 130
years ago.
The worship service was led by
Betty Johnson and Janet Nixon from
Ripley. In the winds of change God
is our shelter and refuge. Take
comfort: we are not in charge, God
is.
An honorary membership was
presented to June Simmons by her
daughter, Mary Simmons. Kamden
Gillespie from Wingham sent a
lovely note of thanks for sending her
to Camp Kintail.
The annual meeting will be held
Jan. 16, 2012 at St. Andrew’s
Presbyterian Church, Wingham.
Synodical will be held at St. James
Church, London April 17-18, 2012.

Making music
The Scott Woods Band was in Brussels once again on Saturday night performing at Melville
Presbyterian Church. Woods, playing the fiddle, brought his show to Brussels to help spread
Christmas cheer with some old holiday favourites and some of his band’s original music as
well. (Jim Brown photo)
