PAGE 15.Despite concerns throughout Central Huron and all of Huron County, a representative from the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office has assured rural Ontario residents that they may keep their barn parties. Thom Evered from the Ontario Marshal’s office asked to speak to Central Huron Council at its Nov. 24Committee of the Whole meeting inresponse to a Central Huron motioncirculating about barn and shed parties in rural Ontario. “There’s a lot of misinformation out there,” Evered said to council, “and I think it was just a miscommunication with council, but at no time has the Fire Marshal’s office been restricting people using their barns for parties in farmingcommunities.”The initial communication on theissue, Evered said, was two different businesses that were agriculturally- zoned operating as party halls being rented out for a fee, which is a much different issue, he said, than a family hosting a wedding reception or buck and doe in their bank barn or drive shed. “These buildings had never beendesigned to hold this many people,”Evered said. “And they were hostinglive bands, large bars and charging admission.” Evered said these venues had websites and were advertising themselves as a venue for rent, which violates its zoning as an agriculture property. “They were hosting events with 300-600 people,” Evered said.He stated that the local authoritieshad been contacted and it turned outthat local officials were aware of the alternative use and weren’t doing anything, so that was when the Fire Marshal’s office decided to step in. If this kind of alternative usage was going on in a building that was not up to fire code, and something Fire Marshal’s office clarifies regulationsBy Shawn LoughlinThe Citizen Continued on page 17 Have a safe and happy holiday RADAR AUTO PARTS "You will find it at CARQUEST" 235 Turnberry St., BRUSSELS 519-887-9661 20 King St., CLINTON 519-482-3445 Highway 8 West, MITCHELL 519-348-8485 Three locations to serve you better For all your automotive and sleigh needs, see the friendly folks at Radar for your Christmas gift ideas. • Hand Tools • Power Tools and more!
