(Photo submitted) THE EDITOR, There are times when we all try to tell a story and get a message across. Then there are times when someone writes a story that has the effect of tugging at your heart. Such was the case with last week’s Letter to the Editor “Writer implores citizens to take action”. One should be saddened that young families that don’t see the allegory for what will become a real life situation in 2012. Riding a bus will never make up for an extra half hour of sleep for a youngster, riding a bus will not improve his/her grades and riding a bus will not make up for the lost opportunity of after school participation. While the community is robbed, so too are the students. By all means, write the sheriff. Wasn’t he the one who said, and to continue on with the metaphor: “If a rural community loses a school … what you’re doing is robbing the community of an important component. It’s the heart and soul of the community. If you don’t have a school, it’s really tough to attract and hold on to young families.” A call to action has been issued. How will you respond? Greg Sarachman, Blyth. North Huron Township Council has decided to proceed with a plan to implement a clear garbage bag policy in 2012. The policy, intended to promote recycling and extend the life of North Huron landfill sites, is expected to come into effect in March of 2012. It had previously been discussed by council at their November Committee of the Whole (COW) meeting on Nov. 14 and a suggestion by the COW to proceed with the plan was approved by council on Nov. 21. The policy states that residents will have to put their garbage in clear bags and leave it at the curb and that anything recyclable or hazardous that can be seen in the bag will result in the bag being left. Using a bag that isn’t clear will also result in the garbage being left. A single small opaque bag, roughly the size of a grocery bag, can be put in with any garbage as a means of privately disposing of sensitive materials. Resident Arnold Taylor questioned council on people who use white kitchen garbage bags and was told that he should empty those bags into a clear bag and if possible re-use the white bag or, if not, crumble it up and put it, empty, in a clear garbage bag. North Huron landfill sites already offer recycling of e-waste (electronic waste), metals, natural waste like lawn clippings, branches and leaves as well as other various materials. For more information on garbage pickup and recycling in North Huron, visit the township’s website at northhuron.ca and click on the “Garbage Pickup” link under the Public Works Department. THE EDITOR, Everyone I talk to is upset about the closing of the Blyth Public School, but nobody is doing anything about it. It’s all talk and more talk. We need someone to show leadership or it will be bad for our community. I’d like to see a meeting called for anyone worried about the loss of our school. Imagine if we filled Memorial Hall. What can we do? There are lots of things we can do when government won’t listen. In the 1970s, for instance, the Huron County Federation of Agriculture and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture (OFA) fought for the principle that education taxes should be removed from farmland – that services for people should be paid for by taxes on people, and services to property, by property taxes. The Ontario Government said they couldn’t do that, but when the OFA led a movement for farmers across the province to withhold their taxes, suddenly the province decided it could be done after all. This has saved Ontario’s farmers millions of dollars over the years. I think Blyth needs a ratepayers association to help guide our North Huron Township Council in what is best for our community. I looked into forming one years ago. It’s a lot of trouble to set one up but it’s not that hard. In this country, almost anything can be done as long as it’s legal – but we need leaders. I wish I was young enough to do it myself. We need younger people to step up for their community. Don’t be afraid. Remember, Jesus was a rebel too.
