SportsIronmen rebound from 5-0 deficit to beat Hanover
The curling leagues are all up and
running at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club. The weather for
November has been fantastic and
some of the diehard golfers have
been taking advantage of the spring-
like conditions.
On Monday, Nov. 21 the daytime
curlers started off the week with 12
teams in action. Winning skips were
Glenn McMichael, Clayt Ruppel,
Barry Simpson, Mac Inglis, Lynn
Hickey and John Mann. The
Monday night men saw Mike Miller
and Hugh Clugston curl their teams
to wins.
Tuesday night ladies teams
picking up wins were Cathy Skinn,
Emily Elston and Jill Eadie. The
competitive league had Earl Fitch go
home with a victory and team Bill
Devos and Niel Edgar settling for a
tie.
The Wednesday mixed curler
winners were Robert Grein, Wayne
Horton and Jill Eadie. Thursday
daytime action saw Glenn
McMichael remain undefeated and
John Mann, Lynn Hickey, Clayt
Ruppel, Norm Fairles and Bob
Johnston also picked up wins. The
Thursday Belgrave group coming
away on top were Fred Meier, John
Nixon, Murray McNichol and Tim
Coultes. Friday night mixed winners
were Team Wayne Waechter and
Murray Fear.
This past weekend the club hosted
the junior zone playdowns. In girls
action Sarah Nuhn of Listowel came
away victorious over Ashley
McKnight of Exeter with both girls
teams advancing to the regionals.
Boys play saw Adam Dickson of
Palmerston lead his team to win the
A championship with
Tommy McGrath of Exeter also
advancing.

It is great to see the curlers back in
action to kick off another year
at the Wingham Golf and Curling
Club.
League organizers are still looking
for new faces and members so if
interseted give the club a call or drop
out anytime.

The Wingham Ironmen scored
four unanswered third period goals
as they rallied from a 5-0 deficit and
defeated the Hanover Barons in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play Friday evening in Hanover.
Wade Stephenson had two goals
and three assists while Aaron
Armstrong had two goals and a pair
of assists to pace the come-from-
behind victory.
The Barons took a 3-0 lead in the
first period and were ahead 5-0 when
Justin Jacklin scored for the Ironmen
at 14:36 of the second period,
Blair Goss and Evan Ducharme
assisted. Armstrong netted
Wingham’s second marker at 16:07
with help from Joel Bowman and
Stephenson. Stephenson tallied a
power play goal at 18:14 with the
assists going to Armstrong and Brett
Brophy.
Joey Terwoord, with his first goal
of the season, put the Ironmen down
by one at the 11-minute mark of the
third period. Armstrong and
Stephenson assisted on the goal.
Armstrong tallied the equalizer at
13:25 on the power play. Stephenson
and Bowman assisted. Nic Carter
netted the go-ahead goal at 15:56
with help from Ducharme.
Stephenson scored an empty net goal
at 19:19 to insure the Ironmen win.
Brophy assisted.
The Ironmen outshot the Barons
35-28 and were 2-9 on the power
play. Matt Stirling earned the victory
in the Wingham net.
The Ironmen have two games this
weekend. They host the Mitchell
Hawks on Friday beginning at
7:30 p.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex. The
Ironmen travel to Goderich on
Saturday for an 8:30 p.m. contest
against the Sailors.
A tough loss
The Blyth Brussels Midget Rep team went 1-2 in the recent
Wingham Silver Stick tournament which had games played
both in Wingham and Blyth. One of their two losses was to
Bruce Peninsula who squeaked by the Blyth Brussels

Kincardine repeated as B
champions of the Wingham
Regional Midget Silver Stick held in
Wingham last week. The playoffs
were held Sunday at the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex.
Kincardine scored a 2-1 decision
over Tavistock in the championship
final. Tavistock fell to Kincardine in
the 2010 final.
Brady Collins and Jordan Bell did
the scoring for Kincardine. Dylan
Yantzi replied for Tavistock.
Following a scoreless first period,
Kincardine scored in the second
period. Kincardine took a 2-0 lead in
the third period and Tavistock
scored in the final minute of the
game.
The C championship was claimed
by Minto as they scored a 3-2
decision over Mildmay, the
defending C division champions.
Minto held a 1-0 lead after the first
period and the two teams were even
at two after two periods of play.
Minto netted the winner with just
over four minutes to play in
regulation.
Scoring the goals for Minto were
Denver Hill, Cole Leslie and
Brendon Aitken. Getting the goals
for Mildmay were Cody Lang and
Jake Bross.
In semi-final play Sunday
morning, Tavistock edged past
South Huron 4-3 and Kincardine
shut out Mount Forest 2-0 in the B
division and Minto doubled up
Wingham 4-2 and Mildmay got past
Bruce Peninsula 3-1 in the C
division.
Aaron Jutzi, Jordan Ritsma and
Alex Taylor each had a goal and an
assist for Tavistock in their semi-
final win over South Huron. Mitch
Schurink chipped in with a goal.
Josh Denotter had two goals for
South Huron and Ryan Hoffman had
one marker.
Mitch Dickson scored both
Kincardine goals in their decision
over Mount Forest.
Greg Allen had two goals for
Minto as they doubled up Wingham.
Single goals were added by Devon
Williams and Ryan Binkle. Josh
Stewart had both goals for
Wingham.
Jake Bross netted a pair of goals
for Mildmay in their decision over
Bruce Peninsula. Brodie Lemay
chipped in with one goal. Grayham
Santin replied for Bruce Peninsula.
Blyth Brussels played three round
robin games, winning one.
In the team’s first game, played
on Nov. 22, Blyth Brussels was
handed a 3-1 setback by Lucknow.
Spencer Stevenson scored for Blyth
Brussels with Mike Van Wyk and
Matt Van Wyk getting assists.
Scoring for Lucknow were Cole
McPherson, Chris Clark and Brad
McIntyre.
Blyth Brussels fell 5-4 to Bruce
Peninsula last Saturday morning in a
game played at the Blyth and
District Community Centre. Mike
Van Wyk scored three goals for
Blyth Brussels and Kevin
Pennington added one goal. Assists
were earned by Rody Millins, Shea
MacLean, Jeremy Ross and Adam
Cousins.
Noah McLay and Jamie
Shoemaker had a goal and an assist
for Bruce Peninsula. Chipping in
with one goal apiece were Joey
McLay, Grayham Santin and CJ
Arthur.
In the final game of the round
robin, Blyth Brussels scored five
unanswered third-period goals as
they defeated St. George 5-2. Brady
TenPas had two goals and three
assists and Connor Prescott had
two goals to lead the team
offensively.
Jeremy Ross had one goal.
Receiving assists were Shea
MacLean and Wyatt Carey.
The Blyth Brussels head coach
Jamie McCallum said he was
disappointed the team was unable to
advance, but noted a couple of his
players were away playing OFSAA
volleyball.
“If we had the desire in the second
game as we had in the third game,
things could have different,” he
said.
According to McCallum, Blyth
Brussels had a strong third period
against St, George.
Results of the games played at the
Blyth and District Community
Centre on Saturday were Bayfield
Clinton Hensall (BCH) three,
Mitchell two; Bruce Peninsula five,
Blyth Brussels four; Plattsville
seven, Seaforth two; Kincardine
five, BCH one; Blyth Brussels five,
St. George two; South Huron four,
Twin Centre two; and Plattsville
three, Mildmay three.
The Atom Regional Silver Stick
tournament gets underway Sunday
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex.
The first game for the Blyth
Brussels Atoms is Monday at 8:35
p.m. when they face off against
Teeswater.
