PeeWees take third in Strathroy
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee AE
team travelled to Strathroy
lastweekend and brought
home a bronze medal for their
efforts.
On Friday, Nov. 18 the boys
travelled to Strathroy playing the
hosts in the opening game
accompanied by Damon Allen and
goalie Jarron Thompson from the
Blyth Brussels Local League team.
The boys were outsized but not
outclassed and hung tough with the
bigger Strathroy squad but came up
short in the end losing 2-0.
The next game was Friday
evening playing Hespeler with team
regular netminder Jeremy Wilts
playing out to give his teammates
some extra legs. After Hespeler
jumped out to an early 2-0 lead,
Craig Raynard put one by the
Hespeler goalie assisted by Nolan
Johnston. Hespeler would continue
its onslaught scoring one more in the
first followed by a scoreless second
with Thompson making some nice
saves. As the boys run out of steam
in the third Hespeler would add two
more for the 5-1 win.
Bright and early Saturday
morning the team would take on the
Pelham Panthers with Jeremy Wilts
between the pipes. With 2:07 left in
the first Raynard notched an
unassisted tally to take a 1-0 lead.
The boys would hold steady and
keep Pelham off the scoresheet for
the remainder of the game and pull
out a 1-0 victory.
Game four of the round robin
would be Saturday afternoon against
Petrolia with Dylan McNeil and
Wyatt Machan showing up with
some fresh legs to help a battered
and bruised team.
Avery McArter opened the
scoring in the first on a pass from
Raynard. Four minutes later Carson
Richmond would score unassisted to
go up 2-0. The second period was be
scoreless. A little over two minutes
into the third Wyatt Machan would
score assisted by Richmond and
Drew Van Wyk. A minute later
Johnston would add another,
assisted by Raynard and Ben
Newell. The Blyth Brussels squad
won 4-0.
With two wins and two losses
Blyth/Brussels qualified for the
bronze medal game against Pelham
Sunday morning.
This game, much like the first
contest with two evenly matched
teams, remained scoreless until the
third period when Josh Gibbons
would bulge the twine with a wrist
shot from the point. Assists were
awarded to Van Wyk and Richmond.
With Pelham putting the pressure on
to tie, McArter put one in the net to
put the icing on the cake. McArter’s
goal was assisted by Newell and
Dylan McNeil. Blyth Brussels
would defeat their opponent 2-0 for
the bronze medal.
Parents were proud of their team
as the kids battled against teams
from bigger centres proving their
never give up attitude.
Congratulations to the boys and
coaches Darren Richmond, Glenn
Raynard, Rick Van Wyk and Tracey
Shearer.
Previously, the team had split two
games, losing to Zurich 2-1 on Nov.
9 and beating a tough Goderich
squad 4-3 on Nov 16.
While hosting the Zurich Thunder,
McArter scored the only Blyth
Brussels marker of the match.
Goals against Goderich were
scored by McArter (2), Newell and
Van Wyk with assists going to
Raynard and Richmond.
The PeeWee team hosted
Goderich on Nov. 23 at the Blyth
and District Community Centre,
however a final score was unvailable
at press time.
The team next plays at home on
Nov. 30 when they will host the
Milverton Drives in Blyth.

with an early goal from Tori Terpstra
