Ironmen best Kincardine, fall to second-last Patriots
Winning ways

Kincardine Bulldogs where they were able to come out on top by a score of 4-0. (Jim Brown photo)
The Wingham Ironmen split a pair
of Western Junior C Hockey League
contests over the weekend.
After stretching their win streak to
six games on Friday evening at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex with a 4-0 decision over
the Kincardine Bulldogs, the
Ironmen were felled by the Mount
Forest Patriots 5-3 on Saturday in
Mount Forest.
The Ironmen now find themselves
in fourth place in the seven-team
league with a 10-8-1-1 record.
Wade Stephenson opened the
scoring on Friday with a goal at
14:41 of the first period. Aaron
Armstrong assisted. Evan Ducharme
made it 2-0 with a power play
marker at 3:28 of the second period,
with Drew Shantz and Brett Brophy
assisting. Stephenson scored at
10:46 of the third period, on the
power play, to make it 3-0.
Armstrong and Tyler Kellum
assisted. Nic Carter scored on a
penalty shot at 15:22 to reach the
final score of 4-0.
Wingham outshot the Bulldogs
33-29 and the Ironmen were 2-5 on
the power play.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
it was a good game. “We played
very well,” he said.
He said the team has been playing
well of late, winning six in a row,
and he hoped to continue that streak
against the Mount Forest Patriots on
Saturday.
The Ironmen were playing with
some intensity and Kincardine is a
team that traps and plays hard.
“We were up tonight. We played
hard,” said Haggitt. “Kincardine
doesn’t quit, so we had to keep
going all night.”
The coach said he was happy to
see the scoring spread out amongst
the four lines.
“Without Aaron (Armstrong) last
weekend, everyone realized that
everyone has to score if we’re going
to win and it just kept going
tonight,” he said.
Cole Pellett of Bluevale said the
team is on a roll, winning six games
in a row.
“The puck is starting to go in,” he
said, ,”It was definitely a team win
out there tonight.”
Pellett said his line is not
struggling, but the puck is just not
going in for them.
“We had some chances tonight,
hopefully they start going in a little
more,” he said.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
on Saturday 51-40 and were 2-7 on
the power play but still came up
short in the game. Armstrong,
Ducharme and Pellett were the goal
getters for the Ironmen. Brophy
picked up two assists.
With the Regional Midget Silver
Stick taking place at the North
Huron Wescast Community
Complex this week, the Ironmen
only have one game this weekend
and it’s on the road. They travel to
Hanover on Friday for an 8:30 p.m.
contest against the Barons.

Wingham Silver Stick celebrates 26 years of hockey
The Wingham Regional Midget
Silver Stick Hockey Tournament is
being held Nov. 20 - 27 and this is its
26th year being sanctioned as a
Silver Stick tournament and the 48th
year the area has hosted a Midget
tournament.
There are 12 teams in the “B”
classification and 12 teams in the
“C” classification. Only teams from
the designated area of the Wingham
Regional Silver Stick are allowed to
enter. The winners of the “B” and
“C” divisions advance to the
International Stick Finals in forest in
January.
Over the years the community and
area businesses have shown great
support for the Midget and Atom
tournaments and for Wingham Silver
Stick. This year is no exception as
over 120 businesses have shown
their support by purchasing an ad in
the Silver Stick program and
sponsoring ice time. By hosting the
Midget and Atom tournaments there
are over 44 teams coming to the
community and businesses have
embraced the opportunity to
welcome the visitors.
All proceeds from the Midget and
Atom tournaments go to Wingham
Minor Hockey to assist in keeping
registration costs affordable for all
boys and girls. Wingham Silver
Stick has been a strong supporter of
the tyke program for four to six year
olds and Wingham Minor Hockey
with the assistance of Wingham
Silver Stick offered the beginner
program free of charge for this year.
As well, there was no increase in
registration costs for all minor
hockey participants this past year.
Wingham Silver Stick has also
established the Brett Cameron
Memorial Scholarship which is
presented each year to a selected
Wingham Minor Hockey participant
who is furthering their education at
university, college or in the trades.
The opening ceremonies for the
Midget Tournament will be held
Friday, Nov. 25 beginning with the
Township of North Huron induction
ceremony to the Wall of Fame at
6:30 p.m. and the Silver Stick on-ice
