What’s the worst that could happen if we try and fail to live like this? What’s the worst that could happen if we lose it all after risking it all? The worst is knowing we have received God’s amazing grace! Will we let God be God this week? Will we take some risks and invest our talents in something that promises to bear fruit? And even if it doesn’t, will we let God be God in our lives? Will we trust in God’s amazing grace to cover our losses? Dr. Robert G. Tuttle, Jr. in his book Can We Talk? Sharing Your Faith in a Pre-Christian World tells this story about a young girl who had visions of Jesus during the latter part of the Middle Ages. The Inquisition was all about during this period and decidedly intolerant of such experiences: “They sought to intimidate her and would summon her before their tribunals. On one such occasion the Chief Inquisitor challenged her while sneering, ‘The next time you see Jesus ask him what sins I confessed at my last confessional’ The following week she was summoned once again. Laughing, the Inquisitor asked, ‘Well, did you see Jesus?’ Remarkably unafraid, she replied simply, ‘Yes.’ Suddenly the entire assembly was attentive as the Inquisitor continued, ‘And what sins did I confess?’ The little girl smiled, Jesus said, ‘Tell him, I forgot.’” Precisely, we can be realistic in response, thus dodge the question, or be resourceful and inspired as was the little girl! What will it be for you and I as we meet the next generation before us in our faith and in our communities? A change in accounting policy has turned the Avon Maitland District School Board’s 2010 accumulatedsurplus of $68 million into anaccumulated deficit of $38 million.Notes included with a draft of the board’s consolidated financial statements at the board’s Nov. 8meeting explained that severalaccounting changes have resulted ina revised amount for the board’s original August 2010 accumulated surplus of $68,661,146. After a $106,890,610 transfer to deferred capital contributions, the revised figure for August 2010 is an accumulated deficit of $38,229, 464. Cheri Carter, financial services administrator, explained that the amount transferred was a result of Public Sector AccountingBoard (PSAB) policy and Ministryof Education direction.“This change will be reflective of every board in the province,” she said. The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board (HPCDSB) heard a similar explanation at their October meeting when Superintendent of Business and Treasurer Gerry Thuss described that board’s $447,930 deficit as an “accounting deficit”, which included costs such as future employee benefits and sickleave. The Avon Maitland DistrictSchool Board had an annual surplus of $303,603 for the year ending Aug. 31, 2011. Trustees passed a motion to accept the presented draft Consolidated Financial Statements for the period of Sept. 1, 2010 to Aug. 31, 2011. The statements were audited by accounting firm KPMG and are available for viewing at www.yourschools.ca New school board policy turns surplus into deficit Gauging Jesus’ expectations Contribution Huron East Mayor Bernie MacLellan, left, came out to Central Huron’s Nov. 7 council session to present a $5,000 donation on behalf of the BCH Minor Hockey Association to Central Huron Mayor Jim Ginn, right.
