Local farms win at Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion Bluevale’s Shayrina Sheep Farm took home the title of Grand Champion Market Lamb at this year’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair earlier this month. The lamb was eventually sold to Mr. Greek for $20 a pound. The farm also received the Fred Hampton Trophy and the Ontario Sheep Marketing Association Banner. Shayrina Sheep Farm was also judged to have the Grand Champion Pen of Three at this year’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair earlier this month in Toronto. The farm also received the James C. On Tuesday fed steers and heifers sold on an active trade at prices $2 higher. Choice steers and heifers sold $112 to $119.50 with sales to $122.25. Second cut sold $107 to $111. Cows sold $1 to $2 higher. On Thursday veal sold ona strong active trade at prices $5 to $10 higher. Lambs, sheep and goats all sold steady. On Friday calves sold $2 to $3 higher and yearlings sold on a strong active trade. There were 128 steers on offer. Kevin and Murray Wagg of Mitchell, consigned twelve steers averaging 1,451 lbs. selling for an average of $114.32 with one limousin steer weighing 1,360 lbs. selling to Horizon Meats for $118. Glencar Farms of Stratford, consigned 43 steers averaging 1,411 lbs. selling for an average of $114.74 with six black steers averaging 1,490 lbs. selling to St. Helen’s Meat Packers for $115.50. Murray Shiell of Wingham, consigned 20 steers averaging 1,528 lbs. selling for an average of $114.79 with six charolais steers averaging 1,468 lbs. selling for $115.35. Southlore Farms of Palmerston, consigned six steers averaging 1,549 lbs. selling for an average of $109.99 with one black steer weighing 1,515 lbs. selling for $115. Leonard and Andrew Black of Proton Station, consigned nine steers averaging 1,438 lbs. selling for an average of $110.34 with four charolais steers averaging 1,461 lbs. selling to Ryding Regency for $115. Schmidtbrook Farms of Woodstock, consigned eight steers averaging 1,551 lbs. selling for an average of $112.65 with two charolais steers averaging 1,570 lbs. selling for $113.75. At the bred cows sale on Saturday, Nov. 5 top quality bred heifers sold $1,175 to $1,450; average quality bred cows, $800 to $1,100. Robert Sider of Atwood, consigned one piedmontese cow weighing 1,745 lbs. selling for $83.50. Dean Becker of Ayton, consigned one limousin cow weighing 1,495 lbs. selling for $82. There were 17 bulls selling $62.50 to $70 with sales to $79. Don Burnett of Gowanstown, consigned one hereford bull weighing 2,250 lbs. selling for $78.50. Kevin Murphy of Seaforth, consigned one black bull weighing 2,060 lbs. selling for $74.50. There were 103 head of veal on offer. Beef sold $125 to $175 with sales to $177; good holstein, $125 to $137 with sales to $143; medium holstein, $100 to $115; heavy holstein, $115 to $125 with sales to $130. Hart Boersma of Mitchell, consigned six veal averaging 692 lbs. selling for an average of $122.49 with one bwf heifer weighing 760 lbs. selling for $127. Ervin W. Shantz of Wallenstein, consigned three veal averaging 738 lbs. selling for an average of $143.38 with one limousin steer weighing 740 lbs. selling for $150. Lambs under 50 lbs. sold $225 to $355; 50 - 64 lbs., $237 to $282; 65 - 79 lbs., $217 to $240; 80 - 94 lbs., $212 to $222; 95 - 109 lbs., $210 to $223; 110 lbs. and over, $196 to $205. Sheep sold $100 to $120 with sales to $130. Goats: kids sold $50 to $160 per head; nannies, $50 to $120 per head; billies, $150 to $250 to $300 per head. Top quality stocker steers under 400 lbs. sold $140 to $199; 400 - 499 lbs., $146 to $180.50; 500 - 599 lbs., $105 to $173; 600 - 699 lbs., $133.50 to $156; 700 - 799 lbs., $122.50 to $148; 800 - 899 lbs., $115 to $140.50; 900 - 999 lbs., $105.50 to $136; 1,000 lbs. and over, $116 to $133.75. Top quality stocker heifers under 300 lbs. sold $115 to $168; 300 -399 lbs., $144 to $175; 400 - 499 lbs., $136 to $160.50; 500 - 599 lbs., $126 to $149; 600 - 699 lbs., $129.50 to $150.50; 700 - 799 lbs., $100 to $139; 800 - 899 lbs., $116 to $130; 900 lbs. and over, $111 to $129. The Royal Agricultural Winter Fair was held in Toronto earlier this month and two local sheep breeders came out as winners. Kevin Bishop of Bluevale’s Shayrina Sheep Farm and Keith Todd of the Todd Sheep Company Inc. of St. Helens were both honoured at the fair in several different categories. Bishop had one of his lambs named Grand Champion Market Lamb. He also won the Fred Hampton Trophy and the Ontario Sheep Marketing Association Banner. Shayrina was also awarded the James C. Bell Memorial Trophy for the Grand Champion Pen of Three as well as the Brussels Livestock Banner. Shayrina also was honoured with top honours in the Wether or Ewe Lamb between 51 and 80 pounds class, second place in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 81 to 90 pounds class, fifth and seventh place in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 91 to 100 pounds class, third and fifth place in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 101 to 110 pounds class, first place in the Southdown Wether Lambs class, first place in the Texel Wether Lambs class, second place in the New Crop Milk Lamb class and second place in the Champion New Crop Milk Lamb class. Shayrina also placed first in both the pen, three lambs, ewes and/or wethers between 91 and 100 pounds and the champion reserve pen of three lambs class. Keith Todd and the Todd Sheep Company took top honours in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 91 to 100 pounds class, as well as second and third place in the class. Todd was also honoured with second place in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 101 to 110 pounds class, fourth, sixth, 10th and 15th place in the Wether or Ewe Lamb 81 to 90 pounds class and second place in the Champion Market Lamb class. The market lamb show was judged by Wardsville, Ontario’s Mark Campbell.
