United Way visits local councils
As part of trying to connect with
all the areas under their umbrella,
representatives of the United Way of
Perth-Huron (UWPH) have been
visiting municipal councils
throughout Huron County.
Recently installed Executive
Director of the UWPH Ryan Erb,
accompanied by Lisa Wilde and
Jack Groothuis, is visiting municipal
councils to inform them of the
activities of the group and to tell
them about one of their other
services; The Social Research and
Planning Council (SRPC).
The council conducts two studies
per year focusing on gaps in the
social services available throughout
Perth and Huron County.
Recently they have done studies
on elder abuse, economic impact,
mental health and a quality of life
index in 2008.
The council existed as part of the
Perth United Way prior to the
amalgamation of the Huron and
Perth branches of the group in 2010
and now services both areas.
The most recent studies, including
the 2011 studies on transportation in
the area and addiction, and the
upcoming quality of life study in
2012 will be some of the first
focused on both areas.
The quality of life study, and all
previous studies, are designed to
help stakeholders see what services
the United Way and other
community groups can provide
which won’t overlap and are
necessary.
“Other studies done by
municipalities may focus on what’s
available and what it will cost to
supply more, but we look at what’s
needed and what’s missing,”
Groothuis said. “When we looked at
transportation we looked at people
who can’t afford it and how people
can get from hospital to hospital for
different services.”
One example Groothuis provided
was a healthcare alliance using their
study on mental illness to determine
that they needed more staff to help
sufferers of mental illness, and one
and a half full time positions were
created to address the need.
Groothuis is accompanying Erb to
the council meetings to express the
need for both financial investment
by the municipalities, who can use
this research to look at services, and
the need for volunteers to keep the
United Way and the planning
committee going.
The SRPC is diverse, according to
Groothuis, which provides them
with a wide variety of experiences to
draw from.
“We have people from all walks of
life,” he said, adding that they have
members from second stage housing
centres, municipal governance and
the healthcare sector.
At the end of each presentation, a
request has been made to the
councils to provide financial
assistance to the two groups. The
United Way seeks meeting their
2011 fundraising goal of $152,011
and funds for the SRPC.
Their campaign has been well
received, according to Groothuis,
with some councils being more
difficult to schedule than others, but
all eventually listening, and some,
like Huron East, decided to support
the group on the spot.
Other councils like North Huron,
have heard the presentation and have
yet to make a decision regarding
making donations.

On Sunday, Nov. 13 at
approximately 9:45 p.m., a Huron
County OPP officer stopped a
motorcycle on Harriston Road east
of Wroxeter.
A check on the vehicle
identification number revealed the
2003 Suzuki Katana had been
reported stolen from Wellington
County.
During the investigation the
driver provided a false name to the
officer. With the assistance of the
Wingham Police Service the
driver’s real name was determined.
A check on his driver’s licence
status determined he was also a
prohibited driver.
As a result, Justin Thompson, 22,
from Morris-Turnberry township
has been charged with possession of
property obtained by crime under
$5,000, Operation while
Disqualified and Public Mischief.
Thompson will attend Ontario
Court of Justice in Wingham on
Jan. 19, 2012 to answer to the
charges.
