The Christmas season is fast
approaching and the first signs of its
arrival are the yuletide garlands
festooned on windows and doors of
the local shops and houses. A
garland wraps us in colourful
greens, bringing comfort and cheer
as the bleak winter snows approach.
And so it is with the latest offering
of the 50-member Blyth Festival
Singers. On Sunday, Dec. 4 the
Singers present “A Yuletide Garland;
Music and Readings for the
Season.”
This musical garland is wrapping
itself around the entire Blyth Centre
for the Arts community. The concert
includes selections from the Blyth
Festival Orchestra, familiar and new
carols of the season by the Blyth
Singers and is punctuated by
readings of the season by Blyth
Festival’s own Artistic Director Eric
Coates.
The Blyth Festival Orchestra, led
by director Sean Kim, is one of
Huron County’s music gems.
Formed in 1995, the Orchestra
offers several concerts each year,
performing as an ensemble as well
as accompanying choral groups and
guest soloists. It is always a delight
and even a surprise to witness the
amazing musical offerings of this
talented circle of musicians; the
Orchestra will certainly be a
colourful highlight of the yuletide
garland.
And who of us hasn’t enjoyed the
dynamic Artistic Director of the
Blyth Centre for the Arts – whether
on-stage, directing a summer play,
or as a much-in-demand master of
ceremonies. Coates will you laugh,
make you cry and make you think as
he shares some humorous and some
poignant seasonal readings with the
audience.
So come and wrap yourself in this
Yuletide Garland of festivities, in the
wonderful acoustic space of Clinton
United Church. The concert begins
at 2:30 p.m. Tickets, at only $15 for
adults and $6 for children can be
purchased from any of the Blyth
Festival Singers, the Blyth Festival
box office at 519-523-9300, the
Village Bookshop in Bayfield, the
Dutch Store in Clinton, The Livery
in Goderich or at The Citizen’s
Brussels office. There might even be
a few tickets at the door.
The Blyth Festival Singers will
also have their 30th anniversary CD
available for sale at the concert.
Consider picking up a few extra for
Christmas giving.
The Blyth Festival Singers is a
county-wide community choir under
the professional direction of Robert
Blackwell, and accompanied by
Laura McAlpine.
The choir performs primarily in
Huron County and has endeavoured
to present a high standard of
choral singing since its inception in
1980.
