Lightning shock Wildcats, Hawks with weekend winsThe Saugeen Bantam AALightning girls took both homegames this past weekend in regularseason Lower Lake league play. On
Saturday’s Sponsor Appreciation
Day, the girls seemed to be suffering
from post-tournament letdown with
a slow start to the game against the
Bluewater Hawks. The Hawks
scored first, early in the second
frame, but that would be the only
goal they would muster against
goaltender Rebecca Ropp.
The hometown Lightning stormed
back with a couple of powerplay
markers in the second period, taking
advantage of untimely Bluewater
penalties. Jamie Simpson scored ona blast from the point with assistsawarded to Maddie Duncan andMiranda Lantz. Lantz scored on a
slapshot herself with only six
seconds to play in the period with
helpers from Ciara Lark and Lexi
Smith. Bluewater stormed out in the
third, looking for the equalizer, but
the Bolts would not let up, scoring
an insurance goal themselves with
Smith stuffing in a rebound after a
point shot from Lark. The
final score was 3-1, for the
Lightning.
The Windsor Wildcats made the
Sunday afternoon trip to the Howick
arena, but they too were sent homedisappointed with a 5-1 loss at thehands of the Lightning. After another slow start and a
scoreless first period, the Bolts
finally seemed to find their scoring
touch with second period goals from
Tori Terpstra and Ashlee Lawrence.
Assists went to Lantz, Simpson and
Jessica Dales.
The third period was all Lightning,
with goals from the sticks of Kaitlin
Eckert, Avery Reeves and Duncan.
Helpers for third period goals were
awarded to Lantz, Smith, Neve
VanPelt and Hannah Herman. The
Wildcats scored one late to spoil the
shutout bid of goaltender MorganBaker. Follow the Lightning results at:www.saugeenmaitlandlightning.com
Winding up
The Blyth Midget Blazers broomball team was in action
over the weekend as a tournament was held in Blyth and
Brussels on Friday and Saturday nights. The home team,
however, lost both of its tournament games, coming up
short here to Mildmay by a score of 3-0. (Vicky Bremner photo)
Midget Lightning shut out
Hawks in weekend action
Goaltenders Stephanie Sluys and
Shea Tiley each had shutouts while
Stacie Vink picked up a hattrick as
the Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
Lightning picked up a pair of
weekend victories in Lower Lakes
play last weekend.
Saturday’s matchup saw two
undefeated teams face off as the
Lightning hosted the Bluewater
Hawks. Hannah Davidson had a pair
of goals while Brittany Hymers
scored on a blast from outside the
blue line to lead the Lightning to a 3-
0 win. Stephanie Sluys stopped all
25 Bluewater shots to pick up the
shutout.
On Sunday, Stacie Vink had
another hattrick while Harley
Westman, Georgia Ottewell and
Hymers added singles to help
Saugeen to a 6-0 win against the
Stratford Aces. Shea Tiley stopped
all the Stratford shots to pick up the
shutout. Picking up assists on the
weekend were Kelly Gribbons
(three), Lindsay Dales (two), Kelly
Garrow (two), Brittany Butcher,
Dollee Meigs, Laura Irwin, Hailey
Herman, Davidson and Vink.

Shootout
London Knights goaltender Michael Houser kept the
audience on their feet as he stretched, slid and generally
stonewalled his teammates during a shootout at the end of
a special practice the OHL team held at the Blyth and
District Community Centre on Nov. 9.
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee 1
