A few good wins
The Wingham Ironmen are back in the win column after what their coach called some of the
best games the team has played all year. The Ironmen beat Mount Forest on Friday night and
then beat Walkerton on Saturday night to complete the two-win weekend. (Jim Brown photo)
The Wingham Ironmen picked up
four points on the weekend in
Western Junior C Hockey League
play. And they picked up the four
points the old-fashioned way, they
earned them.
The Ironmen got past the Mount
Forest Patriots 5-4 on Friday
evening at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex and then they
defeated the Walkerton Hawks 6-5
in a shootout in Walkerton on
Saturday evening.
The Nic Carter-Evan Ducharme-
Justin Jacklin line accounted for
nine points on Friday as they paced
the Ironmen to the decision over the
Patriots. Jacklin had two goals and
two assists, Carter had two goals
and Ducharme of Brussels had three
assists. Jacklin netted the winning
goal at 12:54 of the third period.
Joel Bowman contributed a goal and
two assists to the victory.
The Ironmen outshot the Patriots
36-25 and were 3-7 on the power
play. Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth
said it was a good game for the
Ironmen, with everyone working
hard.
He said the team had a good third
period even though they didn’t have
the intensity they had two weeks
ago against the Hanover Barons and
the Walkerton Hawks. “They played
with them for the first two and then
we came out hard in the third and it
worked out good,” he said.
The coach said he was a little
concerned when the Ironmen took a
4-3 lead and Mount Forest came
back to tie the game at four.
“I knew our guys still had lots to
go and we lapsed for a little bit, but
we were all right,” he said. “Carter,
Jacklin and Ducharme played an
awesome game tonight,” he said. “It
was probably the best game they
played all year.”“
Ducharme said it was kind of nice
that his line got a few points in the
game.
“It was kind of different for once,
to finally get going,” he said. “And,
it felt really good.”
He said the line has been working
hard all year and it was nice to
finally get rewarded. “The hard
work finally pays off,” he said.
Ducharme said the Ironmen didn’t
start off well and they didn’t give
their best effort but they battled
through it and got the win. “That’s
all that matters,” he said.
He said they didn’t have the
intensity they had two weeks ago
and that was evident from the
beginning.
Tyler Kellum netted the shootout
winner against the Hawks on
Saturday. Kellum had two goals in
the game, while Wade Stephenson
had a goal and two assists. Netting
single goals were Jacklin and Travis
Donaldson.
The Ironmen outshot the Hawks
48-39 and were 3-11 on the power
play.
The Ironmen host the Kincardine
Bulldogs on Friday, beginning at
7:30 p.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex. On
Saturday, the Ironmen travel to
Mount Forest for an 8:30 p.m.
contest against the Patriots.

hand a 6-0 thrashing to the
Teeswater Otters.
