Brauns meet Gilmour
The days of November are always
full of wonder. Just plain wondering
what the next day will bring keeps
us alert. As we head into the last
quarter of the year and the season
that we now call Christmas, we
acknowledge that another year will
soon pass, all the good and bad
together. So it’s easier sometimes to
concentrate on the weather –
grumbling about the snowflakes of
last week, even when we’ve been
expecting them, seemed right.
We’re all familiar with the Make
A Wish foundation. This week it
was great to hear the story from the
other side. The grandsons of Murray
and Audrey Johnston, Luke and
Zane Braun have waited a long time
to meet their hero Doug Gilmour.
They met this fine man at theHockey Hall of Fame on Saturdaywhen all their schedules finallymeshed. Meeting him was one of the
life wishes and the meeting met all
their expectations and more. It’s
good to know that things do work
out when everyone keeps a good
attitude.
I had a baking good time on the
weekend as we had the joy of
Jordan, Robyn and Jill visiting. It
takes a little thinking prior to a
baking event, but it is possible to
make cinnamon buns, pumpkin
muffins and tarts, rice crispy squares
and cookies all in the same time
frame. It was a good reminder of
focusing on the present and not
letting the mind wander. So good
job ladies, not a burnt offering all
morning. Games of Uno and
Scrabble are much better with a
choice of treats.
It’s cold and flu time, so wash
your hands well and often and cough
and sneeze into your sleeve, this is
one time, not to share.
Take care of yourself, no one else
can.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Remembrance Day was observed
at the Brussels Legion Branch 218
with a good crowd of people taking
time to stop and remember.
The students of Brussels Public
School marched to join the service.
The service was led by Poppy
Chairman John Lowe in the absence
of President Deb Caan, along with
Padre Sandra Cable.
The wreaths were laid by their
representatives or by Cadets of the
Brussels Army Cadet Corp 2967.
Hundreds of poppies were laid
before the 11 o’clock Act of
Remembrance. The parade was to St
Ambrose Catholic Church and a
large number attended. The parade
went back to the Legion following
the service and a lunch of soup and
sandwiches was enjoyed by all.
A service was held at Huronlea
with approximately 16 Comrades
attending. The service was led by
Padre Sandra Cable with Comrade
Linda Bird taking the salute and
Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald passing
the wreath for the placing of the
poppies by the residents.
The Brussels Public School
students of Grade 6, 7 and 8 came to
the Branch on Tuesday to listen and
ask questions of Veterans Comrade
Ross Bennett and Comrade Forrest
Whittard. The event was arranged by
Poppy Chairman John Lowe. The
students enjoyed listening and
looking at the memorabilia on
display.
The Brussels Cadet Corps 2967
had Lincoln Dinning address them
on Tuesday evening. He spoke about
the Armed Forces and about his son
Matthew, who was killed in the line
of duty in Afghanistan. The Cadets
enjoyed his talk and video
presentation.
The Friday night supper had a
smaller crowd enjoy the roast pork
dinner. This week is wings, fries and
salads.
The Thursday night dart league
and 11 darters taking aim at the
boards. Winners were: first, Ron
Schmidt and Daisy Wong; second,
Glenn Zehr and Sharon Robbins;
high, Kaye Smith, 112 and Glen,
140.
Comrade Barb Dunbar is in
Listowel Hospital at this time. We
wish her continued improvement.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had nine tables of players. Winners
were: first, Bev Hayden and Mary
McIntosh, 81; second, Shirley
Gilders and friend, 80; third, Tom
and Eileen Sloan, 73; lone hand,
Cathy and John Brown, eight; low,
Stuart and Lois Chamney, 48.
A teen dance sponsored by Dance
Techniques was held Saturday
evening from 7-9 p.m. The Sunday
night dance crowd enjoyed the
music of the John Heaman Band.
There were nearly 100 folks
attending.
The early bird winner for October
was Gordon Ross. There are only a
couple of weeks remaining to pay
the early bird price for membership.
The price will go up in December so
drop in today and pay your dues and
get in on the last early bird draw.
The Cadets are still collecting
popcans and the Branch is still
accepting pop tabs.
