Continued from page 2only $1 and lots of fun.The Friday night supper wasenjoyed by almost 50 hungry folks. They enjoyed chicken breast and
turkey. Next week will be roast pork.
The newly-revised craft, bake and
home entrepreneur show had a
wonderful variety of enterprising
people. Tables of available itemsranged from jewellery, foodproducts, cookware, cleaningproducts, makeup, t-shirts, teas, knitting, woodcrafts and more.
There were 23 vendors and a good
crowd of folks looking over the
merchandise. It was a good day and
reports are positive on the new
“look” of the event at the BrusselsLegion. Comrade Linda Bird did agreat job with some wonderful helpfrom Comrades Mabel Glanville,Lisa Glanville, Mary Bradshaw, Jean
Bridge, Grace Procter and Lana
Tonge. A soup and sandwich lunch
was available downstairs and over
50 enjoyed the fare.
Remembrance Day is this week
and the Royal Canadian Legion will
conduct ceremonies across this
country. They will repeat the Act of
Remembrance for all to hear.
“They shall not grow as we that
are left grow old,
Age shall not weary them nor the
years condemn.
At the going down of the sun, and
in the morning,
We will remember them.
We will remember them.”
It is the 80th anniversary since the
Armistice Day Act was amended. It
was in 1931, after persistent
representation from the Canadian
Legion, that Parliament amended the
Armistice Day Act to ensure Nov. 11
would be set aside, as a day upon
which the nation could pay tribute to
those “who gave their lives thatfreedom might prevail.” Nov. 11 wasthe chosen day because it was theday that WWI ended.Over 66,000 Canadian soldiers
had been killed and over 138,000
had been wounded. There were over
628,000 Canadians serving in the
Canadian forces and they were
coming home. But the tragedy of
war would be felt again with WWII,
the Korean War, the Gulf War and
now the armed conflicts in
Afghanistan, with many more
Canadian soldiers serving our
country and sacrificing their lives.
There have been over 46,000 more
Canadian soldiers lives lost so that
“freedom might prevail”. It is the
Royal Canadian Legion’s purpose
and duty to remind Canadians to
remember those who made the
ultimate sacrifice for freedom to
prevail for all. It is up to every
Canadian to help perpetuate the
memory and deeds of the fallen, so
future generations will know the
importance of Remembrance Day.
We invite everyone to make the
sacrifice of “time” to attend
Remembrance Day ceremonies atany Royal Canadian Legion or ifunable, take time to pause andreflect, for two minutes of silence, at11 a.m. on Friday, Nov. 11Legion recognizes 80th anniversary of amendment
ANNEMARIE HILLIS
On Nov. 1, 2011 a very special
person suddenly passed away at her
home in Londesborough at the age
of 61. Annemarie Hillis was a
loving wife, mother, daughter, sister
and friend to many. She loved
animals and nature. Her devotion to
life and caring was phenomenal.
She raised two fine young men in
Allen and Aaron. She was always so
proud of them.
The outpouring of sympathy
has been overwhelming which is
a testament to how many lives
she touched.
Annemarie is survived by her
parents Adrian and Toosje (Toni)
Vos, husband Bob, sons Allen and
Aaron, sister Johanna Hardy and her
husband John and nephew Richard
Hardy. She was predeceased by her
brother Bart.
A memorial service will be held
on Dec. 10 in Blyth at the Falconer
Funeral Homes Ltd., 407 Queen St.,
Blyth at 2 p.m. No flowers please.
Donations to the Heart and Stroke
Foundation would be appreciated as
expressions of sympathy.
