The Wingham Ironmen scored 13
goals on the weekend as they posted
a pair of victories over the Goderich
Sailors in Western Junior C Hockey
League play.
After recording a 5-0 decision at
the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex on Friday
evening, the Ironmen posted an 8-1
decision at the Maitland Recreation
Centre in Goderich on Saturday.
The Ironmen took a 2-0 lead in the
first period on Friday as Travis
Donaldson and Blair Goss did the
scoring. Wingham added two more
in the second frame as Tyler Kellum
and Wade Stephenson scored.
Donaldson tallied the lone goal of
the third period.
Matt Stirling made 26 saves in
recording the shutout in the
Wingham net. The Ironmen outshot
the Sailors 46-26.
Although the Ironmen picked up
the two points against the Sailors on
Friday, they were missing the energy
they had the previous weekend
against the Walkerton Hawks and the
Hanover Barons.
“It’s tough playing against those
guys,” said coach Chad Haggitt of
Blyth. “It’s tough to bring the
intensity.”
Although they were lacking the
zeal, they were able to pick up the
two points which the most important
factor in the game.
The Ironmen were able to get
some scoring from the third and
fourth lines in the game.
“It’s good the other guys are
starting to chip in,” said Haggitt. “It
might be a weekend to get some
guys some goals who haven’t scored
this year.”
The coach said the players realize
it wasn’t their best effort and
hopefully they would bring a better
effort the next night in Goderich.
Wade Stephenson of Brussels said
it was good to pick up the two points
after a three-point weekend the
previous weekend, but agreed with
the coach that if Ironmen didn’t have
the intensity as the weekend before.
“Goderich is the bottom dweller of
the league and it’s hard to get up for
a team like that,” he said. “They just
arent’ as intense as the other teams.”
Stephenson agreed with the coach in
that it was nice to see the other two
lines do some scoring.
He said it was nice to see players
like Blair Goss and Travis
Donaldson do some scoring.
“Trav Donaldson is a player who
can put the puck in the net and he has
a rock of a shot,” he said. “He will
definitely be a top point getter in the
league one of these days.” Cole
Pellett, Kellum and Nic Carter
scored two goals apiece Saturday
night in Goderich. Donaldson and
Aaron Armstrong added single
markers. Brett Brophy picked up
four assists.
The Ironmen outshot the Sailors
39-29 and were 4-10 on the power
play.
Josh Martel scored at 18:19 of the
third period to spoil the shutout bid
of goaltender Hayden McLeod.
The Ironmen host the Mount
Forest Patriots on Friday beginning
at 7:30 p.m. at the North Huron
Wescast Community Complex and
travel to Walkerton on Saturday for a
6:30 p.m. contest against the Hawks.

PeeWee AE drop home opener
The Blyth Brussels PeeWee AEs
showed sparks but couldn’t light the
fire as Elma Logan came to town for
the Blyth home opener and beat the
PeeWees 5-3 on Nov. 2.
Elma Logan started on the
offensive scoring just a little over
two minutes into the first period.
The scoreboard remained static for
the next nearly-two periods until a
flurry of goals tied the game before
the end of the second.
With 31 seconds left in the second
period, Ben Newell skated end to
end with the puck putting a shot on
net and earning an assist as Andrew
Van Wyk slide home the rebound.
Just nine seconds later Nolan
Johnston would pick up a Craig
Raynard rebound and hoist it over
the Elma Logan goalie taking a 2-1
lead.
Unfortunately, that lead was very
shortlived as Elma Logan would
carry the puck from the face-off and
score with 15 seconds left in the
second, tying the game.
The visitors would come out and
score two to start the third to take a
two goal lead, but at 9:32 in the
third, Van Wyk would net his second
of the game, snapping one past the
goalie assisted by Carson Richmond
bringing them back within one.
Elma Logan would score once more
in the remaining minutes to shut the
home team down.
This loss upset the team’s .500
record, putting their season at 2-3.
The PeeWee AE team also played
on Nov 9, hosting the Zurich
Thunder.
A final score was not available as
of press time.
Nov. 16 will see the PeeWees host
the Goderich Sailors at the Blyth and
District Community Centre. The
game will start at 7:30 p.m.
Novice LL start season with tie
The Blyth Brussels Novice Local
League team travelled to Mitchell on
Saturday, Oct. 29 for their first game
of the season, and despite three
periods of solid action, the game
resulted in a scoreless tie.
The team was very excited to get
out on the ice for their first game.
Both teams played well travelling
from one end of the ice to the other.
Neither Blyth Brussels or the
Mitchell squad was able to put one
in the back of the net.
The team played their second
game of the year and their home-
opener at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre in Brussels
on Nov. 5 against the Goderich
Sailors.
A final score was unavailable at
press time.
The Novice team will take to the
ice next on Nov. 13 at the Clinton
Community Centre to take on the
BCH Ice Dogs at 5 p.m.
