This year the group was led by piper John Jewitt, not pictured, to Londesborough United Church for the annual service. (Jim Brown photo) Greeting worshippers at Blyth United Church on Sunday, Nov. 6 were Barb and Doug Howson. Ushering were Terry Richmond, Doug Whitson and Nancy Hakkers. Floyd Herman was music director. Rev. Neil Lackey from Wellesley who was filling in for Rev. Gary Clark welcomed everyone to church. The call to worship was the singing of “O’ Canada” followed by “Standing for the Fallen” while watching the pictures of the soldiers on the powerpoint who were lost in the past few years. Everyone stood silent. The first scripture was from First Samuel 1:19-28. The children were asked to come to the front for their story time. Rev. Lackey asked the children if they knew why we stood silent while we watched the pictures scroll on the powerpoint. Most everyone knew it was because the soldiers had lost their lives fighting for us. Rev. Lackey told them even though we do not know them personally we still remember them. Everyone prayed for a way to make peace in our world. The second scripture Psalm 41 was read in unison and followed by the singing of the response. Rev. Lackey drew everyone’s attention to the announcements printed in the November bulletin. Special attention was paid to the ladies making turkey pies on Nov. 30 and this will be the last of the pie-making until the new year. The next hymn, “Come and Find aQuiet Place”. Rev. Lackey’smessage to the adults was, “What isin a name?” In the scripture this morning many of the names read had meanings to them. Rev. Lackey’s name means companion. Many of the congregation didn’t know what their names meant. We are all in a relationship with God. Many of our soldiers that come home, often have a very hard time adjusting to the everyday life and often think there is no other way out and take their own lives. They are still casualties of war. There is nowhere in the Bible that tells us that we will not suffer a loss. Blyth United Church is a name but we are a people of faith and hope. We must listen to others and show that we are a people of faith. God calls us to be in a relationship with Him and have a passion for life and to look to God for answers through praying. We shouldn’t dwell in the past and be in the present. We are not alone, we live in God’s world. Everyone read the New Creed from the hymn book. The choir anthem was “Let There Be Peace on Earth”. The prayer of confession and the assurance of pardon was followed by the hymn, “Fairest Lord Jesus”. The offering was receivedfollowed by the offertory hymn, theprayer of dedication and the prayersfor the world and a silent time to pray to God. The last hymn “May the God of Hope Go With Us” was followed by the commissioning, benediction and the singing of “God Save the Queen.” Everyone was invited for coffee and a time of fellowship and to greet Rev. Lackey. Lost soldiers result in silence NEWS FROM BLYTH The diamond in that ring! (Thomas Brooks, “The Crown and Glory of Christianity, or, HOLINESS, the Only Way to Happiness”, 1662) “The whole Scripture is but one entire love-letter, all written in golden letters, dispatched from the Lord Christ to His beloved spouse on earth. In it, there is so much to be read of...the love of Christ, the heart of Christ, the kindness of Christ, the grace of Christ, and the glory of Christ, the a holy heart cannot but love, and embrace, and endeavour to conform to every line. The whole word of God is a field — and Christ is the treasure which is hidden in that field! The whole word of God is a ring of gold — and Christ is the diamond in that ring! “The Scriptures point to Me!” John 5:39 A Grace Gem Submitted by: Immanuel United Reformed Church, Listowel, ON 519-291-1956 By Phaedra Scott The Grade 7 and 8 girls danced the morning away with Les Cook of Blyth East Side Dance on Tuesday.
