After several debilitating injuries
sustained in Goderich’s August
tornado that left Blyth’s Jim
Johnston lucky to be alive, several
local service clubs have organized a
night to raise money for a man who
could be on his back until spring.
The Blyth Lions Club, in
conjunction with the Blyth Legion
and the Legion Ladies Auxiliary, is
hosting a fundraiser for Johnston at
the Blyth and District Community
Centre on Saturday, Dec. 3. The
night will feature a silent auction,
raffles and prizes, music, dancing
and a bar.
“We were approached by the
Johnston family,” says organizer and
Lions Club member Steve Howson.
“They were interested in getting
something going and we wanted to
help out.”
After Howson was approached he
brought the idea back to the rest of
the Lions Club members, who he
said were all in favour of chipping
in.
After the Lions Club agreed to
lend their services to the evening,
Howson approached members of the
Blyth Legion, who said they were on
board, along with the Legion Ladies
Auxiliary.
“It’s kind of a come-and-go event
and it gives everyone a chance to
come out and support Jim,” Howson
said.
There is no word yet on how many
silent auction items there will be, but
Howson says he imagines there will
be “quite a few” at the event.
“This is a real joint effort among
all the service clubs and the
whole community really,” Howson
