(Jim Brown photo) The Wingham Ironmen played two of their better games of the season on the weekend and earned a split against the two top teams in the Western Junior C Hockey League. They still earned three points. After falling 3-2 in overtime to the league-leading Walkerton Hawks at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on Friday evening, the Ironmen received a four-point effort from Tyler Kellum on Saturday evening in Wingham as they downed the Hanover Barons 5- 2. Kellum opened the scoring just 40 seconds into the first period, with Dylan Williams and Cole Pellett assisting. Justin Jacklin made it 2-0 with a power play goal at 7:15. Aaron Armstrong and Blair Goss assisted. Brad Pitt scored for Hanover at 11:25 of period one. Armstrong made it 3-1 for the Ironmen at 4:24 of the second period, with Kellum and Wade Stephenson assisting. Kellum made the count 4-1 at 15:24 of period two as Armstrong and Stephenson assisted. Rob Lucciantonio netted Hanover’s second goal at 5:34 of the third period. Stephenson iced the game with an empty net marker at 19:34 of the third with Armstrong and Kellum getting the assists. The Ironmen outshot the Barons 37-23 and were 1-6 on the power play. Matt Stirling earned the victory in the Wingham net. Following the game on Saturday, coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said he felt the Ironmen played better in Friday night’s contest than they did in Saturday night’s contest. “It was a good game tonight, but I don’t think we played as well as we did against Walkerton last night,” he said, “but, we played pretty well.” He said it was good to get somebody besides Aaron Armstrong doing the scoring. “Kellum chipped in tonight and a few different people. So it was good,” he said. In other Ironmen news, Cody Subject of Brussels is no longer with the Ironmen. “He could no longer commit to the team because of work and other stuff,” said Haggitt. “He’s gone back to play juvenile for Blyth and Brussels.” Matt Thadlucas of the Huron Perth Lakers was wearing number three over the weekend. Phil Boertien of Listowel was wearing sweater number two. He was signed due to injuries and sickness. Cole Pellett of Bluevale said it was a good game and they were able to halt a four-game losing streak. “It felt good to get a win after that four- game losing streak,” he said. Although the team was playing loose, they played a tighter style than they have been. “It felt good to be on the winning side,” said Pellett. He said the Ironmen were playing more as a team on Saturday and working hard all the time. “We were doing the little things right and it came through for a win for us,” he said. Armstrong scored both goals for the Ironmen on Friday evening. Both goals were assisted by Kellum and Stephenson. Walkerton took a 2-0 lead in the first period. Armstrong scored once in the second period and tied the game in the third period. Drew Davidson netted the winner 41 seconds into the overtime period. “It was a great game, we played very well,” said coach Haggitt following Friday’s contest. Because Walkerton is the top team in the league, the coach said he was quite happy with the effort. The Ironmen were 0-7 on the power play, but Haggitt said they were all over Walkerton with their power play and it will eventually come around if they keep working at it. Evan Ducharme agreed with the coach in that it was a good game. “We had a great effort tonight. We really came hard,” he said. “We played a full 60 minutes and really took it to them. It was one of our best games of the year by far.” He said it was a tough game to lose, but Walkerton is the best team in the league and they took them to overtime and we got the point. The Ironmen play a home-and- home series against the Goderich Sailors this coming weekend. The Sailors visit the North Huron Wescast Community Complex on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. contest against the Ironmen. Wingham goes to Goderich on Saturday for an 8 p.m. game against the Sailors.
