Neil Hemingway was one of the featured speakers at

Will someone please tell the wee
flies that it’s time to go. Even while
eating breakfast the little buzzers
seem to find a surface in my full
view to land on. Breakfast is way too
early to get irritated. Summer was
nearly over before I realized there
had been an invasion of the wee
pests. Now any food or remnant is
the landing strip on my counter. So
for that reason alone, I’m quite
happy to see winter coming.
The wee ghosties and goblins and
those who love black and orange had
their day of fun for another year.
Now it’s time to tuck the decorations
away and get the Christmas things in
line, not out yet please.
Sports Drive remains a busy spot
with lots of building happening. A
celebration of community was held
at the Habitat for Humanity House
on Sunday afternoon. This is house
number seven for Huron County.
The gathering was partly to bless
the house and partly to give thanks
to all the people who worked so well
together as volunteers for this
common cause.
A lot of knowledge was shared at
this site, licensed people working
alongside others to complete
specific jobs. People working side
by side and sharing time and stories
as they volunteered their time.
Everyone learning that the family
who will live here has worked hard,
met very specific criteria and will
help forward the cause of Habitat for
Humanity.
In every large project each
person’s role is important and every
bit of work and time is appreciated,
but there needs to be a “boss” who
has signed on to take the good with
the bad. So well done NeilHemingway with Donna at yourback, for selecting such a dreamteam as yours. I’ll be sure to misssome of the named main men of the
many committees, so I’ll not start.
Thank you, thank you so very much.
Once again good folks have made
Brussels and area shine by working
so well with a world-wide
organization: Habitat for Humanity.
Polish up your dancing shoes for

at the BM&G Community Centre
from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. Enjoy!
A twinkling eye has closed. Fran
Bremner died last week. Not many
in our spot in the world haven’t met
a Bremner and Fran did the name
proud. We all relate to one of her
“kids” and so got to know the team
of Bill and Fran along the way. As a
twin to Nora, they had a special
sibling relationship envied by many.
Words like pleasant, fun, capable,
mischievous, sports, especially
baseball, laughs, parties, work,
imaginative are but a few of the
words that come to mind as I think
about Fran and her family. She wasan earth angel and leaves manysmiles with her memory. FarewellFrances Bremner.Get out and kick some leaves,
they’ll soon be all gone.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

It was a busy week around the
Brussels Legion Branch. The Lions
Club held its supper meeting at the
Branch and enjoyed a delicious
roast beef dinner on Oct. 24. Branch
helpers included Mary Bradshaw,
Judy Lee and Jo-Ann McDonald.
Tuesday evening was the
Executive and General meeting of
the Branch. There were nine
executive members present. Special
guest was Jacquie Gowing,
reviewing the past year’s financial
statements and making a few
recommendations. Committee
reports were heard from senior
chairman Wanda Walker. She
reported attending a seniors meeting
in Clinton accompanied by
Comrade Mabel Glanville. She also
had a visit with Comrade Barb
Dunbar at Listowel Hospital.
Veteran’s Service Officer Mabel
Glanville reports that no one needed
to see the Provincial Officer Randy
Groundwater this time. She reported
that the Branch assisted 14
Comrades to attend the Veterans
banquet in Lucknow. The Nevada
Chairman Andy Overholt reports a
healthy balance in the Nevada
account.
The sports report concerned the
start of Zone events begin with
cribbage on Nov. 12. Drop into the
Branch to sign up if interested in
playing crib.
The PeeWee hockey team will be
attending the Zone PeeWee hockey
tournament in Lucknow and the
Branch will pay the entry. The
Branch also made a motion to
support one PeeWee hockey team to
attend the Young Canada
Tournament in Goderich. The funds
will come from the Nevada account.
The House committee reported
that the plumbing problems have
been sorted out at the Branch. He
also suggested it was time to replace
some of the hand sinks in the
Branch. The light fixture was
repaired and it has been suggested
that some time in the future, more
energy efficient lights be installed
upstairs. The Branch approved
donations to Clinton, Wingham,
Seaforth and Listowel Hospitals.
They approved a donation to the
Spina Bifida Society and for the
Brussels Santa Claus parade.
The 140th Homecoming
Committee met at the Branch on
Wednesday evening. There were 20
folks in attendance and there were
some great exchange of ideas. Great
plans are in the works for a New
Year’s Day Levee, so plan to be at
the arena January 1 for the kickoff
of 2012 and the year Brussels will
celebrate 140 years.
