day with them.”
Both Luke and Zane have faced
facts about their condition, of which
they both have the most severe form
of the disease, with Luke saying that
the day will come when he and his
brother will no longer be able to
walk.
As a result of the lysosomal
storage disease, the boys both live
with a steady stream of pain. The
disease affects their bones, spines,
organs, hearing, eyesight and
breathing. In addition, the condition
also causes dwarfism. Because of the
disease, Luke and Zane have to use
wheelchairs and scooters to get
around and they have to use a
breathing apparatus every night, in
addition to the multiple medications
and surgeries they have had to
endure.
Debbie says that with the disease
she has to be much more vigilant
when it comes to what most people
would consider general illness.
Common conditions, because of the
disease, can be very serious for them
if they are not taken care of
immediately.
Because of the physical effects of
Morquio Syndrome, the boys also
cannot take part in many sports
activities that their fellow students
do. This is particularly painful for
Luke, who is a huge fan of Toronto
sports.
“We both have scooters for
endurance,” Luke said, showing off
the scars on his knee from his mostrecent surgery where plates wereinstalled in his knees. Luke says when his class is taking
part in sports, he is often the
manager. He may not be able to
physically take part, but he has the
knowledge to mentally participate in
the games.
Through their extensive time at
Sick Kids Hospital, Luke and Zane
have both met their fair share of
Toronto sports superstars, something
that has been a highlight for Luke.
“I’ve met all the [Toronto Maple]
Leafs and a lot of Leafs alumni,”
Luke said.
There is, however, one famous
former Leaf that he has never met,but he would love to meet and that’s Doug Gilmour, one of themost popular players in the team’s
history.
In addition to being big fans of
sports, the boys have found a fan of
their own in former Toronto Argo
Adriano Belli. He met the boys at
Sick Kids one day and before the
Braun family knew it they were
being invited to his retirement party.
While it has yet to be confirmed,
organizers are hoping Belli will be in
Belgrave on Saturday.
The event will feature a food
booth, a bake sale, a pie auction, free
children’s events, toilet bowl races,
games based on the television show“Minute to Win it” as well as a liveauction and what the Braun family isjust hoping will be a fun day with the
Braun family.
When questions are raised about
how long it will be until Luke and
Zane will no longer be able to walk
or the life expectancy associated
with Morquio Syndrome, Debbie
says that she and the boys try not to
get hung up on things like that,
saying they made a decision a long
time ago to live life day by day.
“We just live for today,” Debbie
says as she looks to Luke. To which
Luke responds, “we just live, laugh
and love.”
Despite some concerns with
pricing models and targets, North
Huron Township Council approved
a new development charges
schedule and bylaw.
The bylaw, which will see
residential developers in East
Wawanosh and Blyth Wards pay
$1,400 for developing residential
property and Wingham developers
pay $4,500 per lot for residential
property, was passed during
council’s regular meeting on Oct. 17
after having been tabled for nearly
six weeks.
Councillors Ray Hallahan and
James Campbell, both of the East
Wawanosh Ward, said they were
uncomfortable with the bylaw and
would not be voting for it.
The problem, according to them,
was that developers in the rural ward
will already be paying $12,000 to
$15,000 for a septic system and a
well on top of that, costs that don’t
exist in Blyth and Wingham since
both have sewer and municipal
water.
They both also stated that it was
silly to have development charges in
Belgrave. The village is split
between two municipalities and to
have charges on one side of the
street but not the other will send
developers to the Morris-Turnberry
part of the village.
Councillor Bernie Bailey, who
made the initial motion to accept the
bylaw, stated that the charges were
important in mitigating costs passed
to the general tax base.
Bailey also commented that Blyth
developers should be paying for
upgrades to water systems to prevent
ratepayers from having to upgrade
them in the future, if the
development causes the water
system to reach its capacity.
Campbell, however, stated that
you can’t charge for any plans that
aren’t firm and that the current
capacity will be enough.
“We can’t charge if the current
capacity is enough for the systems
and Blyth isn’t near capacity yet,”
he said.
Councillor Brock Vodden echoed
that sentiment, stating that Blyth
was nowhere near ready to look at
future development.
”We’d have to have much more
advanced plans for development in
Blyth,” he said. “We would need
more than a hunch that we might
have development somewhere, or
people saying we should develop at
a certain location because the village
needs 200 more people.”
Vodden stated that as the bylaw
was presented he was ready to pass
it.
“I’m quite satisfied with the
bylaw,” he said. “This is a positive
move for all wards. It will raise
funds to support future development
in the community.”
Vodden also noted that through
meetings council had with local
developers that they had seen
charges like this before and felt they
weren’t out of question.
“When we met with developers,
HURRY. This promotion ends November 30, 2011.
