he was doing some chores after a
long day at his off-farm job. He
admits he was tired and that led to
carelessness. The rotating PTO shaft
caught his pants and before he knew
it he found himself naked on the
other side of the shaft, missing his
leg, with his other leg broken and
dislocated, his right elbow broken,
his ribs broken, a vertebrae in his
back broken and he was beginning
to lose some of the eight litres of
blood (of the 10 the body holds) that
he would lose before he could be
stabilized.
After managing to pull himself
out of the shed where he was at the
time of the accident, he was found
by his father who called 911 and
told Donna, who is a nurse. The first
emergency worker on site was OPP
Constable Vu Pham, later murdered
in an on-the-job shooting.
Ambulance workers got him to
Wingham hospital where he was
stabilized and put on an air
ambulance to London. During the
trip his heart stopped and he had to
be resuscitated.
After long rehabilitation he
returned home and tries for as
normal a life as possible, helped
with a $40,000 leg that needs to be
replaced every five to 10 years (“I’d
really rather have a new truck”, he
joked.)
Another level of normalcy was
reached earlier this year when he got
a job as a parts manager for aLucknow implement dealership.He received a standing ovation atthe end of his talk.
Also at the meeting, former MP
Paul Steckle was presented with the
2011 Huron County Federation of
Agriculture Award for Outstanding
Contribution to Agriculture. During
15 years as MP for Huron-Bruce he
“did it his way”, said director
Stephen Thompson in presenting the
award. Steckle served two years as
chair of the Standing Committee on
Agriculture and also lobbied
tirelessly to have the case of Steven
Truscott re-opened, Thompson said.
In the elections, Marinus Bakker,
RR3, Auburn was acclaimed for a
second term as president. Carol
Leeming of Seaforth was acclaimed
first vice-president. Joan Vincent,
RR3, Wingham was acclaimed as
second vice-president.
Elected to the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture’s Policy Advisory
Committee were Ken Scott from
Huron East; Steve Thompson,
Huron West and Wayne Hamilton,
Huron South.
Township directors are: East
Wawanosh, Ian Scott; Goderich, Jeff
Klomps; Hay, Grant Jones; Hullett,
Carman Drost; McKillop, Ken
