Ironmen need someone who
can stop the puck says Haggitt
The Wingham Ironmen are
looking for a goaltender who can
stop the puck.
The Ironmen were handed a pair
of 5-3 setbacks in the Western
Ontario Junior C Hockey League on
the weekend, despite outshooting
their opponents.
After falling 5-3 to the Mitchell
Hawks on Friday evening at the
North Huron Wescast Community
Complex, the Ironmen were
defeated by the Mount Forest
Patriots on Saturday evening in
Mount Forest.
After outshooting the Mitchell
Hawks 40-11 on Oct. 15 and losing
a 4-2, the Ironmen outshot the
Hawks 31-14 on Friday but were
still defeated.
Aaron Armstrong did all the
scoring for the Ironmen on Friday
evening. Brett Brophy had three
assists. Wingham was 1-9 on the
power play.
Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said
there is nothing wrong with the
team.
“We are playing hard, everybody’s
working hard,” he said. “We can’t
keep outshooting teams two to one
and losing hockey games.
“We have to find someone who
can stop the puck,” he said.
He said that maybe Brandon
McDonald, who was rookie of the
year last season, is suffering from
the sophomore jinx.
According to Haggitt, the Ironmen
need someone to come in and to
“stop the bleeding”.
The coach said the Mitchell goalie
played a good game, but the
Ironmen still outshot them.
He said the players have to step up
and score some goals because they
are going to be giving up a lot of
goals.
He said the players they have are
good, but they’re just going to have
to step it up a bit.
Defenceman Cody Subject
of Brussels said they had
lots of shots, but were just
unable to capitalize on their
opportunities.
“We outshot them, we had double
the shots they had and we still
couldn’t score,” he said.
The assistant captain said they
need some second line scoring
because there is a lot of pressure on
the first line. “Our defence played
pretty well. We’re working together
out there,” he said.
The Ironmen outshot Mount
Forest 32-30 and held a 3-1
advantage after 20 minutes of play.
After two periods of play, Wingham
held a 32-20 edge in shots. The
Ironmen did not have a shot on net in
the third period.
Dylan Williams had two goals for
Wingham in the final minute of play,
34 seconds apart, in the opening
period. Wade Stephenson of
Brussels also scored for the
Ironmen.
The Ironmen have a pair of games
at the North Huron Wescast
Community Complex this weekend.
On Friday, they host the first place
Walkerton Hawks, beginning at 7:30
p.m. and then on Saturday they
tangle with the Hanover Barons,
with the game getting underway at
7:30 p.m.

Tough weekend
The Wingham Ironmen had a rough weekend losing both of
the games they played. Their coach says they’re having
trouble stopping the puck and that their offence isn’t the
problem. Here the Ironmen took on the Mitchell Hawks,
losing by a score of 5-3. (Jim Brown photo)
Lightning bring home Hocktoberfest Champion again
The Saugeen Maitland Midget AA
team were successful as defending
champions this past weekend at
Windsor’s International
Hocktoberfest tournament.
This year’s tourney saw two
Ripley area players play the hero
role in the championship game
versus the Chicago Young
Americans. With Chicago leading 1-
0 with 12 seconds left in the game,
Laura Irwin banged in a rebound to
send the game into overtime.
Midway through the overtime
period, defenceman, Abbey Gibson
jumped into the offensive zone to
feather a shot past the Chicago
goaltender and give the Lightning
the gold medal with a 2-1 victory.
The Lightning started the four-
game round-robin portion of the
tournament with a tough 4-3 loss to
Chicago. Saugeen then reeled off
three consecutive wins against
Aurora 3-0, Team Illinois 3-0 and 2-
1 versus Honeybaked from
Plymouth, Michigan to finish in first
place in pool play. In the semi-final
game, the Lightning easily handled
the Willowdale Red Wings 3-0 to
advance to the championship match.
Goaltending was solid again for
the Lightning with Stephanie Sluys
picking up a pair of shutouts while
Shea Tiley had one shutout and
stood tall in the gold medal game.
After the opening game loss, the
defensive core played solidly, only
allowing two goals in their next five
games highlighted by a game –
saving diving play by
Brittany Hymers in the gold medal
match.
Goal scorers on the weekend were
Kelly Gribbons (four), Laura Irwin
(two), Stacie Vink (two), Dollee
Meigs (two), Hannah Davidson
(two), Lindsay Dales, Brittany
Butcher, Kelly Garrow and Abbey
Gibson. Assists were awarded to
Butcher (four), Brittany Hymers
(three), Garrow (three), Davidson
(three), Gibson (three), Irwin (two),
Vink (two), Gribbons (two), Dales,
Meigs, Sara Gossell, Hailey Herman
and Harley Westman.
It was a rough affair Sunday night
as the Blyth Brussels Peewee AE
boys travelled to Mitchell and lost to
the hometown Meteors 5-1.
The Blyth Brussels crew came to
Mitchell with a short bench but came
out in the first period flying with
some fast-paced end-to-end action,
as one fan put it. There were many
scoring chances, great saves at both
ends and some big hits.
The game remained scoreless until
halfway through the second period
when Mitchell opened the scoring
and scored another three minutes
later taking a 2-0 lead. With 1:52 left
in the second Nolan Johnston scored
a beauty of a rebound from Jared
Shearer and Avery McArter. It was a
one goal game as the teams hit the
locker room at the end of two
periods of play.
Blyth Brussels started the third
with a man in the penalty box and it
only took 30 seconds for Mitchell to
capitalize followed by an even
strength goal just a minute and a half
later.
The Peewees had some scoring
chances in the third but couldn’t
solve the goaltender from Mitchell.
Jeremy Wilts stood tall in the
Blyth Brussels net making some
fantastic saves as always among the
barrage of rubber he faced.
Mitchell scored another late in the
third making the final 5-1 for the
home squad.
The Blyth Brussels Peewee AE
team’s next game is Friday, Oct. 28
at the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre at 7:30 p.m.
Peewee AEs lose second game
The Blyth Brussels Atom Little
League team travelled to Monkton
Monday Oct. 24 night to face the
Elma Logan Wildcats and came
home with a 5-3 win.
Scoring goals in the first period
were Ben Jacklin and Kyle Josling,
assisting were Brent Alexander,
Jason Wilts, Joe Jacklin and Adam
Shortreed.
Going into the third period with
the score tied, Wilts came out and
scored two goals, assisted by Ben
Jacklin, Joe Jacklin, Reese Sparling
and Alexander.
Connor Brooks scored the fifth
goal off a pass by Josling to secure
the win.
Playing strong between the pipes
was Devin Bridge with the help of
John Nesbit, Kelden Pawitch,
Greg McDonald and Johnathon
Vincent.
Previously, the Blyth Brussels
Atom Litttle League team had lost 9-
1 to the BCH Ice Dogs. This win
brought their season record to 1-1.
The Atoms hosted the Zurich
Thunder at the Brussels, Morris and
Grey Community Centre (BMGCC)
on Oct. 22, but a final score was
unavailable.
The team’s next game is at the
BMGCC on Oct. 29 at 9:30 a.m. as
the Wildcats attempt to take revenge
for the 5-3 loss.
