Breakfast of champions
Shortly after waking on Saturday morning, Pastor Les
Cook indulged in some breakfast while donating to the
local scouting group by buying an apple for the most
important meal of the day. Kaleb Johnston was the apple
salesman who got a helping hand from his mother Lauren.

Help makes work easyGreeting worshippers at BlythUnited Church on Sunday, Oct. 23were Lori and Connor Brooks.Ushering were David Onn, ArlettaHallahan and Terry Richmond.
Lynda McGregor was filling in for
Floyd Herman as music director.
Emily Phillips was in charge of the
service in the absence of Rev. Gary
Clark. She welcomed everyone to
church. Emily drew everyone’s
attention to the announcements in
the bulletin with special mention to
the fall supper on Oct. 29 from 4:30
to 7 p.m. Call Cliff Snell or any
member of the stewards for tickets.
Call Joann MacDonald if you wish
to order meat pies. Also the Sunday
School is collecting nickels for
Nicaragua to buy uniforms for the
children to attend school.
The call to worship was “Where
Two or Three are Gathered.” The
first hymn, “Come In Come In and
Sit Down” was followed by the
prayer of approach. The children
were asked to come to the front for
their story time. Emily asked the
children to just call her grandma.
She asked the children what they
thought of their grandmothers and
why they were fun to be with. Some
answers were, sleepovers, making
cookies, drawing pictures and
playing in the hot tub. Emily told
them when we work together like
baking cookies there isn’t muchmess as if they were doing it bythemselves. The church is like that too.Everyone is working together to
prepare the lunch today after the
service. It doesn’t matter whether
we are small or big if we all work
together it makes the task easier.
The children went down to Sunday
School for their time of fellowship.
The scripture readings were from
1st Samuel 16: 6-13 and the second
reading was from Mark 10:13-16.
The response was “Your Word is a
Lamp for My Feet and a Light for
My Path” was sung. The next hymn,
“Lord Speak to Me” was sung.
Emily’s message to the adults was
Why is salvation by faith?
(Thomas Watson, “Body of Divinity”)
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith — and this not from yourselves,
it is the gift of God — not by works, so that no one can boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9
To exclude all glorying in the creature. Faith is a humble grace. If salvation were by
repentance or works, a man would say, “It is my righteousness which has saved me!”
But if it is of faith, where is boasting? Faith fetches all from Christ — and gives all the
glory to Christ!
God’s believing people are a humble people. “Be clothed with humility.” God’s people
shrink into nothing in their own thoughts. David cries out, “I am a worm, and not a
man!” Though a saint, though a king — yet a worm! When Moses’face shined, he
covered it with a veil. When God’s people shine most in grace — they are coved with
the veil of humility. Abraham the father of the faithful, confesses, “I am nothing but dust
and ashes.” “God resists the proud.” Surely, God will not take to be with Himself in
glory, such as whom He resists..
God’s believing people are a willing people. Though they cannot serve God perfectly —
they serve Him willingly. They do not grudge God a little time spent in His worship.
They do not murmur at sufferings. They will go through a sea and a wilderness — if
God calls. “Your people shall be a willing people.” This spontaneity and willingness is
from the attractive power of God’s Spirit. The Spirit does not force — but sweetly draws
the will. This willingness makes all our services acceptable. God sometimes accepts of
willingness without the work — but never the work without the willingness.
God’s believing people are a consecrated people. The have “holiness to the Lord”
written upon them. “You are a holy people to the Lord your God.” God’s people are
separated from the world — and sanctified by the Spirit. The priests under the law were
not only to wash in the laver — but were arrayed with glorious apparel. This was
typical, to show that God’s people are not only washed from gross sins — but adorned
with holiness of life. They bear not only God’s name — but His image!Holiness is
God’s stamp; if He does not see this stamp upon us, He will not own us for His believing
people.

Ms Badham is very proud of the
senior girl soccer players at Blyth
Public School. The girls were
undefeated on Oct. 18 and brought
home yet another championship
banner. Their motivation was
provided by Kathryn who inspired
all by claiming that this was the last
time they would play as a Blyth
Public School soccer team.
Ms Badham also sends her thanks
to Kim who took on the lead
coaching job during practices and
on tournament day. Way to go girls!
Also, the junior girls soccer team
won two games. They had 11
players so every girl was on the field
for the whole tournament. They
tried their best and had lots of fun.
Both boys’ soccer teams showed
great team work and effort. Mrs.
Decker coached the junior boys
soccer and said they came away a
little dirty and tired but had an
amazing time. Mr. Gole coached the
senior boys team and said every
game came down to the final
minutes with just a one-goal
differences with Blyth coming out
of the losing end each time. The
cross-country meet was also a huge
success. Everyone finished the race
and had a great time.
As promised, the answer to last
week’s math question:
2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2+2
-2+2x0 is 26. Almost every Grade 8
student said that the answer was 0.
But as the question asked, follow the
orders and operations of BEDMAS
and then you will get 26.
C’est l’halloween in all of the
French classes as they learn spooky
and fun vocabulary. The library has
some new history and fiction books
which Mr. Brown thinks are pretty
cool. Some of the Grade 8 students
worked as the Witches Walk on the
weekend. The event went well and
they all had fun.
The kindergartens are still having
fun with all their “colour fall” days,
dressing in completely orange or
brown or some other colours. The
grade 1 students went to the theatre
last week and watched The Wind in
the Willows. They also read a book
called Apple Trouble and learned
about the characteristics of a
narrative. They learned that there is
a problem and a solution.
The Grade 2 students went to the
theatre with the Grade 1 students to
watch the performance as well.
They’re also practising their
addition skills with “Mad Minute”.
They’ve had a lot of fun with their
Ant unit, which they just finished off
last week. They are also working on
jot note skills which they’ll use to
help finish their projects.
