The Brussels Legion Branch held
its 80th anniversary celebration on
Sunday afternoon. The day began
with a social at 3 p.m. Comrades had
the opportunity to visit and look at
the many history books of the
Branch and the original Charter for
the Branch and numerous pictures.
The Honours and Awards began at 4
p.m. President Deb Caan welcomed
everyone to the Branch and then
turned the afternoon events over to
Comrade John Lowe, who is the
Honours and Awards Chairman.
The act of initiation was

Another month nearly spent, time
to dig out the orange duds and
celebrate with the ghosts and
goblins.
It’s such fun listening to the young
ones chat about the possibilities of
dress, for upcoming parties and
neighborhood visits. Ballerinas,
witches, aliens, fortune tellers and
firefighters were the winning
categories of the folks I listened to
plan their attire. For me the orange
fingernail polish with the witch hat
will probably do. Enjoy the visitors, their attire and enthusiasm. The quilters in our midst report asuccessful show in Teeswater on theweekend. Admirers, learners and
teachers all enjoyed the quilted
masterpieces shown there, as well as
the lunch available prepared by the
members of the guild.
F.E. Madill Secondary School
held its commencement on Friday
night and several area parents and
grandparents watched with pride as
their offspring accepted recognition
of their scholastic abilities. Smiles
on faces were seen as Baker, Bishop,
Cardiff, Hakkers, Kerkhof, Watson
and White students made their way
across the stage. Well done and good
luck as you head into the next stages
of your life.
Lots of people popped into the
5R’s on the weekend to enjoy
refreshments and chuckles as theyviewed pictures of the past 20 yearsand then shared their stories of how5R’s has influenced them and theirshopping. The store, first in the
Mitchell building was way ahead
with the reduce, reuse, recycle,
reclaim and rejoice theme that was
and remains the reason for being in
business. Well done people!
Christmas gifts were being viewed
as the United Church folks enjoyed a
good crowd checking the articles at
their silent auction. Chatting,
checking, wondering, guessing and
waiting are all part of the excitement
of this event. So thanks for your
participation and support, we’ll
think of you as we enjoy our new
furnaces.
Communities change around us
and often the change is permanent
before it really affects our lives and
then gets our attention. Churches inour area are facing facts thatattendance and financial support isnot part of the norm. Churchbuildings are often seen as service
for hire, no longer a worship site.
Meetings are being scheduled and
held so that folks associated with a
congregation can chat about the
future. Grandparents and parents
who built our buildings and then
maintained them for our use, made
some hard choices over the years.
It’s time for us to talk and make
decisions so that we too, can leave a
church presence for our children and
grandchildren. We need to determine
our role and reason in community.
We need to make plans. It’s time for
us to chat about choices, be sure to
have your say.
Enjoy the changing weather.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
