Blyth Festival Art Gallery seeks new artists Fall Rally held in Monkton Bluegrass, fall fashions showcased at theatre By Mary Hall PRO Huron Perth District WI The Huron Perth District Women’s Institute held its fall district director’s meeting at the Monkton Optimist Hall on Sept. 12. District President, Winnie Trachsel welcomed everyone and the meeting began with the Institute Ode and the Mary Stewart Collect. The president reported that she had the honour of presenting the Huron Perth District Women’s Institute “Woman of Exellence Fair Award” to Bonna May this summer at the Listowel Fall Fair. This award recognizes a deserving WI member who has made an outstanding contribution to their local fair. ROSE co-ordinator, Ria Stewart gave a report on the upcoming Ladies Night Out to be held in Listowel on Nov. 3. The theme is “Sweet and Sassy”. There will be fashion shows featuring clothes from Zehrs (Joe Fresh) and BK Wholesalers after the supper. The models will be members of the Women’s Institute. The guest speaker, Gayle Ritter from Chocolates on Main will talk about her business making and selling chocolates. Each branch was asked to supply a door prize. Darlene Harding gave a report on the Country Heritage Park in Milton. She thanked the ladies who volunteered their time to look after the Institute Hall there during the summer months. Since Pauline Weiland was not in attendance, Darlene also gave a brief update from the April board meeting. The four regional scholarships have been merged into one scholarship of $1,000. It is available to a student graduating from high school and going on for further education. The membership co-ordinator is available to conduct workshops on ways to obtain new members. The annual general meeting for FWIO will be held at the Kempenfelt Centre in Barrie on Jan. 5 and 6, 2012. A complete set of Home and Country magazines have been digitized at the provincial office this past summer. The 72nd Guelph Area Convention will be held at the Palmerston Community Centre on Oct. 12. Each district has been asked to set up a display representing the theme “Keep the WI Heart Beating”. The Huron County Fall Rally will be held on Oct. 3 in Auburn with the theme “Water, Water Everywhere”. The Perth County Fall Rally will be on Oct. 20 with the theme “Hats Through Time”. A request was received from Perth South District asking for help in the hospitality tent at the 2013 International Plowing Match to be held in the Mitchell area. It was agreed that help would be provided. A brief discussion was held on the closing of the Erland Lee Museum Home. Winnie read a letter from a lady who had worked as a summer student at the Lee giving many details about the home and expressing her concerns about the closing of the Lee. It was the feeling of the group at the meeting that the Lee should reopen. The next District Director’s meeting will be held in January at the Gowanstown Hall. The Wingham Heritage Theatre will be hoppin’ with the first-class bluegrass sounds of Randy Morrison and the Flatt River Band on Sunday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. The band was formed two years ago but there are years of professional musical experience in the group. Randy Morrison has opened for Faron Young, Gene Watson and Glenn Campbell as well as playing in the Mac Wiseman Band. Morrison also plays the mandolin and sings. On banjo and vocals, Larry Miller, winner of the Pioneer Award for Banjo; Richard Dugal, on vocals and guitar and Martin Chapman touted as “the most versatile bass player on the continent” on upright bass. The music is a blend of Canadian old tyme fiddle, traditional bluegrass and classic country. According to Morrison, “Our goal is to play the music we love and share with as many as possible in a most professional way that will give venues and the public a most enjoyable experience.” Randy Morrison and The Flatt River Band recently played at the Wingham Barn Dance in Blyth earlier this year. Emcee for the show will be Dan Bieman, host of Bluegrass Rules on AM920, CKNX. On Tuesday, Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. the Wingham Heritage Theatre will be presenting its third annual fall fashion show. A fundraiser for the North Huron Food Share and the Wingham Heritage Theatre, the fall fashion show features fashions from a hardworking group of local businesses, Christine’s Clothes Closet, The 2 Step, Seedlings, The Natural Path and the Wescast Aquatic Centre. Finishing Touches will be decorating the theatre for this special event. Once again there will be containers provided by North Huron Food Share (NHFS) to collect non- perishable food items. Chairman Gord Kaster reports that the NHFS supports 120-130 families per month which translates into approximately 300 people. The Food Share is open Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. to serve their clients’ needs. Last year at the fall fashion show through generous donations, eight buckets were filled to overflowing so let’s shoot for 10 buckets this year! There will also be a collection box for monetary donations which Kaster said are “greatly appreciated”. The Big Dig is almost complete for this year so come and support the North Huron Food Share while you check out all the newest fall and winter fashions. You may even get some great ideas for your Christmas list. For more information about these show and the Wingham Heritage Theatre’s upcoming programs, call the box office at 519-357- 4082. The Blyth Festival Art Gallery wants to encourage artists to exhibit their work during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. Greg Sherwood, head of the exhibition committee says, “We sometimes hear that area galleries ignore some of the best regional artistic talent in favour of better- known names from farther afield. So we’re putting out a special call for submissions to give our Huron County and region artists the opportunity to exhibit their work here in the Bainton Gallery at Blyth.” Besides the annual community shower, an open (non-juried) showing of regional artwork, and the student show (works by Huron and Perth high school art student) the gallery mounts three special art exhibits each year. Usually three weeks long, they may be solo, two- person or group showings on a particular theme. Individual artists or groups are invited to submit a proposal to the gallery for consideration for the next two seasons. Work in any media (painting, print making, photography, textiles, ceramics, sculpture, etc.) is acceptable and will be selected on the basis of artistic merit. All work must be professionally finished and framed for exhibition. Application packages must include the artist’s contact information, current biography and CV, an artist’s statement, exhibition concept and quality images of recent work in the same style as will be represented in the show. These may be submitted in hard copy form or ditially on a CD and mailed to Greg Sherwood, PO Box 1201, Wingham, ON N0G 2W0 to arrive by Nov. 10. 80th Birthday Please join the family of Lois McCall Sunday, October 23 for a come-and-go tea celebrating her 80th Birthday from 2-4 pm Huronlea 820 Turnberry St., Brussels, Ontario Best wishes only Larissa Jenkins has graduated form Central Huron Secondary School and is a CHSS scholar.
