When friends are hurting we want to help and sometimes all we can do is hope and pray. So thanks to the Lions, The Legion and Optimist Club for helping us help just a little. It’s going to be a busy time for the United and 5R’s folk on Friday andSaturday. For the rest of you, feelfree to just wander back and forth asyou enjoy the company and themerchandise available for your pleasure. The United Church has a Silent Auction every two years to raise money, this year for furnaces and people are very generous in the items they offer for auction. It’s amazing the selection and we all win. You get a good deal and the church gets the money. Speaking of amazing, the 5R’sCommunity Thrift Shop is 20 yearsin business. We were there beforethrift, antique or consignment storeswere popular and the few that were about, were not popular places. So after convincing our local lawyer that we meant business, that we wanted to be incorporated as the 5R’s, we never looked back. The one 5R’s constant has been Joan Jacobs over the past 20 years. Joan was one of our first employees, she’s still with us and we appreciate that she never gave up when money was tight, never quit when we moved the store down the street and was always pleasant when board members got grouchy. I’m not so sure we’d be celebrating this anniversary if Joan and her unique personality were not in our company. To all the others who have worked, supported and shopped with 5R’s thank you. See you at the store and at the United Church on Friday and Saturday. Bye now, Betty G.W Biennial auction to be held Challenge: Getting enough calcium and vitamin D to maintain strong bones and protect against osteoporosis Solution:Women 19-50 years of age should consume 1000 mg of calcium and 5 ug (200 IU) of Vitamin D per day. Milk and milk products, such as cheese and yogurt provide the most readily available source of calcium and other bone building nutrients. Other sources include calcium-fortified beverages (soy, rice and orange juice) tofu made with calcium sulfate, salmon and sardines with bones, sesame seeds and almonds. Bok choy, kale and broccoli also provide calcium but in smaller amounts. Vitamin D is found in fluid milk, eggs, fish and fish liver oils, margarine as well as in soy and rice beverages fortified with vitamin D. Sunlight on the skin can be a major source of vitamin D but is limited in Canada from October to March and by use of sunscreens. To prevent osteoporosis women are encouraged to get enough calcium, vitamin D and protein, limit caffeine, have sodium in moderation, and keep active particularly with weight-bearing activity.
