(Photo submitted) Madill Senior Girls winfirst at Cross Country meet The Madill cross country running team continued its preparation for the upcoming conference and association championships competing in a large and competitive meet at the Springwater Conservation Area near Aylmer, Ontario. Many of the runners were able to better previous race times and gain some valuable race experience. The Senior Girls had a great run winning first place overall in a hotly contested five kilometre run. Julie- Anne Staehli, Madeline Yungblut, Brianna Bird and Michele Studhalter turned in a strong team performance edging out a strong St. Thomas Aquinus team and Huron Park team. The girls have their focus on Huron Perth and (Western Ontario Secondary School Athletic Association) WOSSAA hoping to earn a berth to the Ontario High School championships in Ottawa in November. They will meet these teams again at WOSSAA and must place first or second in order to qualify for OFSAA. The week’s results gave the team some confidence in meeting this challenge. The Senior Boys continued their relentless march on improving their previous performances with four of the runners (Tom Versteeg, Lucas Klages, Ben Vallis, and Jason Meier) once again achieving their best times of the season. All runners who attended gained in race experience. Their next competition is the Huron Perth Championships to be held at the Morrison Dam in Exeter on Thursday, Oct. 20. Races begin at 11 a.m. with Midget Girls and the final race going at 2 p.m. (Senior Girls). The following week (Thusday, Oct. 27 WOSSAA is held at the same site. Blyth Brussels Peewee AEs struggle with season start The Blyth Brussels Peewee AE team had a rough start to their season, dropping their season opener 6-5 against Zurich and losing 8-1 to Goderich. Friday night saw the Peewee AE team travel to Zurich for their season opener against the Thunder. From the chatter in the room before the game it sounded like the boys were well acquainted with one another and excited to hit the ice. Craig Raynard opened the scoring at the 6:19 mark of the first period on a rebound from a Jared Shearer shot. Zurich would answer back halfway through the second with two quick goals to take a 2-1 lead. Avery McArter would knot the game up less than a minute later with an unassisted tally. At the 3:25 mark Owen Andrews would score on a beauty passing play assisted by Carson Richmond and McArter. Blyth Brussels would add one more in the second with Raynard winning the draw and Shearer popping one over the goalie’s shoulder. Zurich would score with four seconds left in the second to pull back within one. The start of the third proved to be tense with Blyth Brussels’ goalie Jeremy Wilts making some outstanding saves but at the 11:06 mark in the third, Zurich managed to beat him with a bullet to tie the game at four. Blyth Brussels would answer 30 seconds later with Shearer scoring on a rebound from a boomer from Ben Newell and assisted by Nolan Johnston. Zurich would continue the seesaw battle scoring less than a minute later as well, tying it once again. At 5:01 in the third the Zurich tender would attempt to pass the puck and the sneaky Andrews would intercept and score for the lead. Wilts, with the help of the defence of Josh Gibbons and Brett Stevenson, managed to thwart the advances of Zurich to hold onto a 6- 5 victory. Sunday afternoon the team travelled to the old barn in Goderich to face the Sailors. It proved to be a one sided affair with the visiting crew spending an ample amount of time in the penalty box. Wilts stood on his head on many occasions but couldn’t stop them all but not for a lack of effort. Goderich was looking like they would celebrate an 8-0 shutout win until Newell would spoil the fun with a quick wrister on a pass from Johnston with 22 seconds left on the clock. The team welcomed speedy forward Andrew VanWyk as he was unable to make the first game. The team’s next game is next Sunday, Oct. 23 in Mitchell at 7 p.m. The Blyth Brussels Bantam Rep team began the season right with a 3-0 road win over the Hanover Falcons. It looked like the booming tunes from the dressing room had the boys awake for the opening game of their season. The boys came out firing on all cylinders, peppering the Hanover goalie with shot after shot. Finally, near the end of the first, Quinton Sjaarda finished off a rush by Dustin Pennington by grabbing the rebound and putting it in the empty cage. The boys did a great job of limiting Hanover’s chances through the whole game but Dalton Carey was still called upon to make some great saves in the second and third periods to keep us ahead. The Hanover goalie was outstanding, not letting the game get out of hand, even when we had to kill a couple penalties, he was called upon for some of his best saves. After Hanover clanged the post behind Carey with three minutes left in the third, our boys poured on the pressure and Sjaarda knocked in another one with 1:18 left, tipping a shot from Conner Rodger at the point. This only spurred the boys on with Josh Van Soest scoring, from Wyatt Ducharme at 32 seconds to seal the deal. It was great to see all of the boys from Blyth, Brussels and Wingham come together and play a strong and unselfish game. The Bantam Rep team’s next game is in Blyth on October 23 at 7:30 p.m. against Wiarton.
