THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20, 2011.Sports The Wingham Ironmen split a pair of weekend games in the Western Ontario Junior C Hockey League. Paced by a the three-goal, two- assist effort of Wade Stephenson of Brussels, the Ironmen scored a 7-1 decision over the Goderich Sailors on Friday evening at the North Huron Wescast Community Complex. Playing at the Mitchell Arena on Saturday evening, the Ironmen were handed a 4-2 setback by the Hawks. The Ironmen are now at 4-6-0-1 in the standings and are in fifth place in the seven-team league. The Ironmen took a 2-0 lead in the first period on goals by Joel Bowman and Justin Jacklin. Stephenson scored his hattrick in the second period and Aaron Armstrong also scored as the Ironmen took a 6-0 lead after 40 minutes. Bowman tallied his second goal of the game a 3:26 of the third period to give Wingham a 7-0 lead. With 3:07 left in the game, netminder Brandon McDonald lost his shutout bid when Brandon Priestap scored for the Sailors. The Ironmen were 4-10 on the power play. Wingham outshot Goderich 45-13. Coach Chad Haggitt of Blyth said the game was one of the team’s better games in recent weeks. “We just worked. Everybody worked hard tonight,” he said. “We worked on the power play and penalty kill in practice, and it seemed to be clicking tonight.” Being an over-ager, Haggitt said Stephenson is expected to chip in with some scoring. He noted that McDonald had a relatively easy time in net in the game facing a total of 13 shots. Wingham took a penalty late in the period and Goderich scored after the penalty was over to spoil the shutout bid. Stephenson said he really had a big game and his linemates were helping him put the puck in the net. Even though Goderich is a different team than Mitchell, Stephenson believes the win against the Sailors would give the Ironmen confidence in their Saturday evening contest against the Hawks. He added that Mitchell was coming off a 5-1 win over Walkerton the week before. “It’s going to be a tough game,” he said. Mitchell outscored Wingham 3-1 in the second period as they defeated the Ironmen 4-2 on Saturday. Tyler Kellum and Armstrong were the goal getters for the Ironmen. Wingham was 0-5 on the power play. Mitchell outshot the Ironmen 43-34. The Ironmen host the Mitchell Hawks on Friday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Wingham. On Saturday the Ironmen travel to Mount Forest for a 7:30 p.m. game against the Patriots. The golfers enjoyed another good year and the year-end awards have been handed out in the past few weeks. The Tuesday ladies had some new golfers take home trophies with Ann McKinney and Sylvia Pewtress being named the ladies’ senior champions. Linda Walker repeated as ladies’ club champion. The Wednesday senior men had another great year and the Bill Dauphin memorial trophy came down to the last couple weeks with Wayne Gordon edging out Gerry Edwards and claiming the trophy. The boys wrapped up their year on Oct. 5 with a pork chop luncheon and Jan Dauphin was on hand to present the trophy to Wayne. It was great to see league organizer Bill Johnston back at the course and at the presentation. The Thursday night men enjoyed a fantastic year averaging 53 golfers a week. Ninety-nine different golfers won weekly prizes with Jay Marston and Dennis Knox taking home five each. Bill Kerr does a terrific job organizing the night and many thanks from both management and players go out to him. Cheryl Burchill and her kitchen staff Candace, Elyse and Jessi did a stellar job keeping everyone fed and watered and Bruce Pewtress, course superintendent, along with Dave and Greg kept the golfers raving about super playing conditions. Thank for another great year. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The curling season kicks off Nov. 1 and league representatives are looking for both teams and individual players to help form the draws. The club is offering 1/3 off membership for all spares and new curlers and have not increased the prices for existing members. New heaters have been installed to control the ice temperature that makes for better ice and more comfortable playing conditions. A free clinic is being offered on Sunday, Oct. 30 at 10:30 a.m. All new curlers are welcome to try the sport for a few weeks before committing to the leagues.
