FROM BRUSSELS
Flower boxes inBrussels look great
As the weather changes and we
prepare for the next season, we look
around at the present. Often the look
is in appreciation of the things we so
often take for granted. First on my
list would be the Brussels Cemetery.
The flowerbeds are wonderful, the
neatness of the place makes it a very
peaceful place to be. Just wandering
around, gets you thinking about the
people and how the names there
impacted our community. So thanks
for the care and attention given to
this property.
As the days get colder, the time
left for the outside flowers is
numbered. I appreciate the time and
attention spent on the flower boxes,
first by the Horticultural Society and
then the ongoing diligence of Rick
and the rest of the Huron East crew.
The boxes look great and give our
village a real lift. The ball park’s
neatly cut and the new trees and
beds getting started show our pride
in community. To all of you thanks.
Lots of chat took place on Friday
night at the Legion. The reason for
getting out and about was the
Goderich Relief Fund. Donations
will be matched two to one by
government, making a real gift to
the sorrows in Goderich. Nearly
$5,000 was received at this event. So
thanks for the opportunity to see old

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Putting in time
On Friday several Brussels service groups, including the
Legion, the Optimists and the Lions Club hosted a joint pub
night fundraiser at the Brussels Legion. The evening raised
nearly $5,000 for the Goderich and Area Disaster Relief
Fund. Doing their part out back in the cold were Gerry
Wheeler, left, and Frank Stretton. (Vicky Bremner photo)

Fantastic is the result of the
Friday night Pub Night fundraiser
for the Goderich and Area Disaster
Relief Fund. The generous
donations of the over 140 folks
totalled over $4,600 which will be
matched by the government 2-1, for
a total revenue of over $13,800 for
the fund. The combined efforts of
the Legion, Optimists and the Lions
Club had a great evening enjoyed by
all.
The members of the Lions Club
were on hand to receive and write
the receipts for the many donations
given.
The Legion provided the hall for
the event and served up wings and
fries. The Legion and Optimists
provided manpower at the fryers.
The Optimists looked after the
advertising and thanks to Gerry
Wheeler for his great idea. Steve
Silcox provided the music and
everyone had a good time. Thanks
to the citizens of Brussels for their
generous support of others in their
time of need.
Legion helpers in the damp and
rainy night included Rick
McDonald and Lisa Glanville and
the kitchen help was Jo-Ann
McDonald, Mary Bradshaw and
Mabel Glanville. Nicole Noble and
Melody White looked after the bars
for the evening.
The Friday night supper of wings,
fries and salads was enjoyed by only
a small crowd of just over 20. Next
week is ham and scalloped potatoes.
There were nine tables of euchre
players on Saturday afternoon at the
Brussels Legion Branch. Winners
were: high, tied, Joann Macdonald
and Dorothy Patterson and Viola
Adams and Ruth Sharpin, 72;
second, Louise and Bev, 70; third,
tied, Glenn and Jean Bridge and Bill
and Faye Albert, 69; lone hands,
Ruth Picard and Shirley Gilders,
eight; low, Elunid McNair and Jean
Bewley, 40.
President Comrade Deb Caan,
Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald,
District Youth Chairman, John
Lowe and Branch member,
Comrade Eric Ross in his position
as chairman of the Tri-District
Hospital Committee attended the
District C Convention held in
Elmira on Saturday and Sunday.
comrade Glenn Bridge as Past
District Commander and Branch
member attended on Sunday.
District Conventions are held twice
yearly in the spring and fall and
attend to the business concerning
branches in the district and in
Ontario. It is always interesting and
something new is always learned.
Comrade John gave his report on
the youth activities in the district in
the past six months and Comrade
Eric gave his report on the Hospital
Committee. Comrade Jo-Ann
McDonald was presented with a
plaque for her first-place scrapbook
for category “E” in the scrapbook
competition.
The Branch had the celebration of
the 20th anniversary of the TFA
ladies ball team. They had an
enjoyable evening playing games
and reminiscing and having a great
time.
Thanks to Murray Pipe and Verne
Bridge for coming to the aid of the
Branch employee Melody when
water problems erupted at the
Branch, which forced the
cancellation of the Sunday night
dance.
