The September meeting of the
Melville Guild and WMS was held
in the church parlour on Tuesday,
Sept. 13. A one-minute silence was
observed for Cathrine Campbell.
The WMS Purpose was repeated
in unison to open the meeting. Alice
Marks read the call to worship, “God
is Great, God is Good”. The hymn,
“Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee” was
sung. The scripture Psalm 126 was
read in unison.
The topic, “Live Laugh and be
Blessed” was read by Alice Marks
and “Joy, Laughter and Humour”
was read by Leona Armstrong.
Leona Armstrong read, “Pastors
Business Card” and “Twenty-six
Ways to be Happy and Wise” was
read in unison.
Mrs. Armstrong led in prayer and
the hymn, “Jesus the very thought of
Thee” was sung. The Mizpah
Benediction was repeated by all to
close this part of the meeting.
The minutes of the June meeting
were read and approved. Jeanne
Kirkby gave the Guild treasurer’s
report and Leona Armstrong gave
the WMS treasurer’s report. The roll
call was answered with everyone
telling a highlight of their summer.
The next Guild meeting will be Nov.
15 with Jeanne Kirkby and Dona
Knight conducting the devotions.
Dona Knight moved to adjourn
the meeting.
A lovely lunch was served by
Leona Armstrong and Alice Marks.
M-T to meet with North Huron on fire costs
Melville Guild and WMS holds Sept. meeting
Dissatisfied with the answers
provided in a staff-to-staff meeting
over fire costs, Morris-Turnberry
councillors will seek to send a
delegation to meet with North Huron
Council.
Council defeated a motion that
would have accepted the proposals
for fire coverage for 2012 and 2013
from Howick, Huron East and North
Huron departments.
Councillors were unhappy withthe lack of information madeavailable at a meeting between NorthHuron’s CAO Gary Long and Fire
Chief John Black and Morris-
Turnberry’s Administrator Clerk-
Treasurer Nancy Michie and
Community Fire Safety Officer
James Marshall.
Michie said North Huron officials
were unable to provide a copy of the
fire department’s budget at the
meeting. When it arrived several
days later, it raised more questions
about the proposal.Councillor John Smuck noted thaton a per capita basis, Morris-Turnberry is paying much more for
coverage than North Huron.
Morris-Turnberry had originally
sought proposals for fire coverage
for a five-year period. North Huron’s
quote proposed a 2.7 per cent cost of
living increase in each of the five
years with an additional 1.5 per cent
in 2014, the third year of the
proposed contract. Over the length
of the proposal, the cost of contracts
from all three fire services wouldhave increased 15 per cent to$313,227.Noting that most of North Huron
councillors had been present for a
presentation on the Richard W.
LeVan airport earlier in the meeting,
Deputy Mayor Jason Breckenridge
said he wished they’d stuck around
to answer questions on the fire
service. He then proposed that
council should seek permission for a
delegation to attend the North Huron
Council.
Some councillors doubted a face-to-face meeting would do any good.“I’d like to think speaking to theircouncil would lead to something but
in reality I think they’ll listen to their
own staff,” said Councillor Jamie
McCallum.
“I just think in the spirit of good
conversation we should discuss it,”
said Breckenridge.
A motion to seek a meeting with
North Huron was approved by
council with Mayor Paul Gowing
voting against it.
