Men of Note
The musical collective Men of Note was in Brussels on Oct. 2 to perform for the congregation
at Melville Presbyterian Church in honour of its anniversary service. The church also
welcomed Rev. John Hogerwaard to the pulpit for the special service. (Vicky Bremner photo)

The first week of October was a
quiet week for the Brussels Legion
Branch. We hope everyone had an
enjoyable Thanksgiving.
Comrade Jo-Ann McDonald, in
her position as PRO Chairman,
attended the Zone PRO seminar at
the Clinton Legion Branch on
Monday evening. A report by a
provincial scrapbook winner and a
question and answer period was
included.
Cadets met on Tuesday evening
and the pipe band practised on
Thursday evening.
Melody White has been filling in
for the vacationing Sandra Josling
and we thank her for a good job and
welcome Sandra back to work this
week. Comrade Eric Ross filled in
for a shift behind the bar on
Saturday evening.
The co-ordinated efforts of the
Legion, Lions and Optimists will
come together this weekend for a
fundraising event for the Goderich
Relief Fund. A pub night will be
held with wings, fries, music, cards,
darts and an all-round good time for
the community to gather and
support our friends and neighbours
in Goderich. Come out on Friday
night. Donations will be collected
and official tax receipts will follow.
The funds raised will be matched
up to a 2-1 ratio by the province.
The doors will open at 6:30 p.m.
and the wings and fries will be
available until 10 p.m. Join our three
service clubs in their efforts to help
our neighbours in Goderich and
area.
The Friday night supper was
cancelled due to the Thanksgiving
celebrations but will return this
Friday night with wings, fries and
salads on the menu.
The social afternoon and honours
and awards to celebrate the 80th
anniversary of the Branch is being
held in only two weeks. Replies for
the dinner would be appreciated,
sooner than later, and we invite
anyone interested in attending to
contact the Branch.

At the Branch
Fundraiser to be held in Brussels
The folks at Soup & More 2 had a
quiet celebration last month as they
ate cake and smiled that they’d been
together for a year. The good meals,
made by different volunteers each
week are well received by 30-60
friends. Chatting while sharing food
with different folks is good for
everyone.
I think the workers in the kitchen
have as much fun as the ones
enjoying the menu, which is co-
ordinated weekly by Elaine
Armstrong and Mary Douma. If you
haven’t tried it, come any
Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 1
p.m. for a good lunch and a friendly
chat.
After celebrating Thanksgiving,
we realize that we have very little to
do with the good fortune that is ours.
Last week the Legion, the Lions and
the Optimists joined forces to help
our community share our concern
and blessings with the Goderich
area.
The power of nature did
unbelievable things in August to
buildings and trees in their
community. Our need to help was
aided and organized as our service
clubs led the way for us to share.
The verbal and moral support we
can offer is very important to our
neighbours by the lake, as the reality
continues. If you missed the Friday
night gathering I’m sure a member
of any of these Clubs would get your
donation to the right place.
Mental health is finally getting the
air time it has so long been denied.
Death and sex seem to be easier to
talk about than a person’s mental
well-being. We offer sympathy for
cancer and car accidents, we show
great concern for cardiac events or a
diagnosis of diabetes, but
depression, addiction or suicide
attempts leave long silences. We
need to talk and listen.
Mental Health Week, last week,
had people talking about the effects
of mental illness on their lives. The
difficulty of telling family and
friends how they really felt seemed
to be the biggest hurdle. Getting
timely, appropriate help was the next
hurdle. When our mental health is
unwell and compromised, many
lives will be affected. So be alert to
your own feelings and be a good
listener and advocate when someone
tells you of their concerns. Please
ask for help, you would if your arm
was broken.
Share your worries, get help and
life can balance again.
The hockey gang are coping with
the changes in logistic that comes
with sharing ice time and space in
Brussels and Blyth. It’s not quite as
handy and like all other changes in
life that come our way, it takes
getting used to and a positive
attitude.
Enjoy the colours of autumn and
be sure and kick a few leaves, it’s
good for you.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Mental health given exposure
Centres to be auditedImpressed with the results of awalk-through energy audit of the
Seaforth and District Community
Centre, Huron East Council is going
through with full energy audits for
its two major community centres.
At the Oct. 4 Huron East Council
meeting Clerk-Administrator Brad
Knight said the Seaforth walk-
through was helpful and that there
could be dollars saved there and at
the Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre through an
energy audit. In addition to the
potential savings, he said, there are
incentives to perform the audits
through Festival Hydro.
Knight said the audits, performed
by Efficiency Engineering Inc.
would be paid for on a 50/50 basis
by Festival Hydro. The total cost for
both audits would be $7,482, which
meant just $3,741 of cost to the
municipality.
“This is a cheap way to do two
comprehensive reviews,” Knight
said.Knight said the cost would be paidout of the year’s recreation budget.“Some of these incentives are pretty good right now,” Knight
said.
Councillor Larry McGrath agreed
with the decision of council,
however, he said that once the report
was completed, council needed to
act on it to make it worthwhile.
“Any more reports and we’re
going to have to build a library (to
hold them) if we don’t act on them,”
McGrath said.
